The rupee opened broadly unchanged near 94.90 per US dollar on Wednesday, hovering near Tuesday’s two-month low of 94.80, as the greenback firmed on expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy. The Dollar Index was up 0.13% at about 99.80, a little over a two-week high, while Fed funds futures were said to be pricing 67% odds of a 25bp hike on 16 September and implying 60bp of tightening over the next 12 months. Rate expectations have been supported by higher inflation projections tied to rising oil prices and disruption risks linked to US-Iran tensions. Kpler data cited by Al Jazeera showed five vessels transited the waterway versus a 10-day average of around 14, as shipping avoided the Strait of Hormuz, which carries almost one-fifth of global energy supply; Trump said US strikes followed an alleged attempt to place sea mines and that a base in Jordan intercepted eight missiles.

Markets are awaiting US labour data, with ADP due at 12:15 GMT and forecasts pointing to 48K private payrolls in August versus 44K in July, followed by Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls release. In India, Standard Chartered lifted its FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.2% from 6.6%, citing Q1-FY27 growth of 7.8% versus a 7.3% consensus and expecting Q2-FY27 growth of 7.4% versus 6.6% previously, while projecting H2-FY27 at 6.7% versus 6.5%. On charts, USD/INR held below the 20-day EMA at 95.41 with RSI near 35; support sits at 94.80, then 94.15.

Key Trading Levels and Derivatives Strategies for USD/INR and Brent Crude

We suggest derivative traders closely watch the 94.80 support level on the USD/INR pair, as a clean break below this two-month low could trigger a rapid slide toward 94.15. Given that the Relative Strength Index is hovering near a weak 35 and spot prices remain capped by the 20-day Exponential Moving Average of 95.41, purchasing near-the-money put options on USD/INR looks like a smart play. If the support holds, however, we should expect a quick short-covering rally back toward the 95.40 resistance zone.

With Brent crude prices reacting sharply to Strait of Hormuz shipping disruptions, where daily vessel transits have plummeted from 14 to just 5, energy volatility is bound to spike. We recommend buying straddles on crude oil options to capitalize on sharp, unpredictable price swings caused by the ongoing US-Iran tensions. Historically, geopolitical bottlenecks in this strait, which handles about 20% of global petroleum liquids, have led to double-digit premium spikes in short-term oil derivatives.

US Dollar Outlook, RBI Reserves, and Market Triggers

Although rising US Treasury yields and a 67% chance of a Fed rate hike on September 16 favor the US Dollar, India’s economic fundamentals remain incredibly strong. We must remember that the Reserve Bank of India holds massive foreign exchange reserves, which hovered around $680 billion in recent months, giving policymakers plenty of firepower to prevent aggressive rupee depreciation. This solid backstop suggests that selling USD/INR upside call options above 95.80 could yield steady premium decay.

The immediate path for currency futures will be dictated by this week’s US ADP and Nonfarm Payrolls data, which could cement or dismantle the Fed’s hawkish path. If Friday’s job numbers beat the consensus estimates, we should brace for a brief US Dollar surge, offering a prime entry point to short the USD/INR at higher technical levels. Conversely, weak employment data will likely accelerate the rupee’s rise toward the 94.15 support target.
