Gold prices in the Philippines fell on Friday, according to FXStreet data. Gold was priced at PHP 8,011.38 per gram, down from PHP 8,053.62 on Thursday, while the price per tola slipped to PHP 93,443.10 from PHP 93,935.79 a day earlier. Other reference prices were PHP 80,112.95 for 10 grams and PHP 249,181.80 per troy ounce.

FXStreet said it derives local gold prices by converting international levels using the USD/PHP rate and then applying local measurement units, with daily updates based on market rates at the time of publication. It added that the figures are indicative and that local prices may diverge slightly. Separately, the World Gold Council data cited showed central banks added 1,136 tonnes of gold worth around $70 billion in 2022, described as the highest annual purchase since records began.

Market Dynamics and Trading Opportunities

We are seeing a temporary dip in gold prices, with local rates in the Philippines dropping to PHP 8,011.38 per gram today. This minor pullback offers a strategic entry point for derivative traders looking to buy the dip. Globally, gold has maintained strong support levels near $2,400 per ounce this year, making these short-term drops highly attractive for call options.

Institutional Demand and Macro Hedging Strategies

We should pay close attention to central bank buying, which reached over 1,030 tonnes globally in recent years and continues to support the market. This massive institutional demand creates a reliable price floor, reducing the risk of a prolonged bear market. Traders can use bull call spreads to capture the upside while keeping premium costs low.

Additionally, current expectations for global interest rate cuts later this year make gold an attractive hedge against currency depreciation. Since gold typically rises when bond yields fall, positioning for a weaker US dollar in the coming weeks is a smart move. We suggest using short-term put options on the US dollar to complement long gold futures positions.
