The stock market experienced mixed results as the day progressed, with technology and healthcare sectors facing difficulties while financials and energy showed resilience. Broad indices exhibited slight gains, primarily supported by financials, energy, and segments of technology.

During the final four hours of trading, market leadership narrowed, with mega caps cooling and semiconductors remaining heavy. In the last hour, a shift to mixed results was noted as profit-taking affected large caps, with healthcare and semiconductor weaknesses persisting, but energy and financials remained positive.

Key Movers In Technology

Key movers in technology included AAPL with a slight increase of 0.09%, while MSFT decreased by 0.24% and NVDA fell by 0.17%. Communication and internet stocks such as GOOG and META experienced slight declines, while software and services saw modest gains, with CRM increasing by 0.29%.

In the healthcare sector, LLY reversed to a loss of 0.77%, and in consumer staples, WMT and COST saw small gains. Energy stocks like XOM rose by 0.11%, whereas industrials showed minor declines.

Market participants should note that semiconductor equipment remains vulnerable, healthcare experienced a sharp shift, and financials and energy maintained their strength. Stabilisation in mega cap tech is necessary for future upward momentum.

Market Uncertainty And Strategies

We are seeing a market that is hesitating after a period of strength, with leadership starting to narrow significantly. The late-day fade on September 8th is important, especially with the latest August 2025 CPI report showing inflation remains sticky at 3.6%, fueling concerns the Fed may not cut rates this year. This uncertainty supports a more defensive and selective posture in the coming weeks.

The weakness in semiconductors, particularly in equipment names like KLAC and AMAT, looks like a developing trend. This follows reports from last month showing a slowdown in data center expansion and a slight inventory build-up for the first time since the AI boom of 2023-2024. For derivative traders, this presents a clear opportunity to look at buying puts or establishing bear call spreads on the SMH sector ETF.

Healthcare’s sharp reversal, led by LLY, is a major red flag for a sector that has been a market leader. This suggests momentum traders are quickly taking profits, a pattern we also saw in early 2024 before a similar sector pullback. Given the shift, purchasing out-of-the-money puts on IHF or specific names like LLY could provide protection or a profitable downside play if this rotation continues.

On the other hand, the resilience in energy and financials offers a potential hedge against broader tech weakness. With WTI crude oil prices holding firm above $90 a barrel due to ongoing supply discipline from OPEC+, selling cash-secured puts on stocks like XOM or CVX can generate income while defining a lower entry point. The same strategy could apply to strong financials like JPM, which benefit from the current high-rate environment.

The muted action in mega-caps like Apple and Microsoft, combined with a slight uptick in the VIX to 16, suggests the market could enter a choppy, range-bound period. This environment can be ideal for strategies like iron condors on broad indices like the SPY or QQQ, which profit from low volatility. However, we must watch if these key names can find support, as their direction will likely determine the market’s next major move.
