NZD/USD Near June High as Treasury Buyback Plan Hits Dollar, RBNZ Hike Bets Support Kiwi

NZD/USD rose to about 0.5980 on Tuesday, close to its highest level since 1 June, as a softer US Dollar (USD) and firm Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) rate-hike expectations lifted the Kiwi. The USD remained under pressure after the US Treasury outlined plans to expand buybacks of longer-dated bonds, with reports saying US Secretary Scott Bessent can draw up to $1 trillion from the Treasury General Account to fund the purchases.

Lower yields followed, while an earlier safe-haven bid linked to Middle East tensions ebbed after the US said the Strait of Hormuz was free of mines. Focus now turns to Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Kevin Warsh, who is due to speak at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday. Technically, the pair was at 0.5977 on the four-hour chart, holding above the 20-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) near 0.5967 and the 100-period SMA around 0.5900, with resistance at 0.5983 and an RSI near 62. Support levels are seen at 0.5971, then 0.5967–0.5965, with 0.5944 below.

Strategy for Derivative Traders Amid Dollar Weakness

We believe derivative traders should position for a near-term rally in the NZD/USD pair as it tests key resistance at 0.5983. With the US Treasury’s massive $1 trillion buyback plan putting downward pressure on yields, the US Dollar Index has recently slipped by over 0.5% to slide below the 101.50 mark. This macro backdrop creates a prime environment for buying short-term NZD call options or entering long futures contracts to capture the upward momentum.

RBNZ Policy Outlook and Risk Management Tactics

On the New Zealand side, firm rate-hike expectations remain highly supportive as domestic inflation pressures persist. Historically, when the Reserve Bank of New Zealand maintains a hawkish stance while the Federal Reserve faces easing pressures, the Kiwi has rallied by an average of 3% to 5% over the subsequent weeks. We suggest setting initial upside profit targets near the next major psychological resistance level of 0.6050.

For risk management, we advise traders to place protective stop-loss orders on long positions just below the 20-period moving average zone of 0.5967–0.5965. A breakdown below this level could trigger a quick slide toward the 100-period average near 0.5900, where fresh buying interest is historically strong. Keeping leverage moderate ahead of Friday’s highly anticipated Jackson Hole address by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will help us navigate any sudden market swings.
