New Zealand’s imports dropped in January to $6.73b. This was down from $7.6b in the previous period.

The change shows a fall of $0.87b. The figures compare the latest monthly total with the one immediately before it.

Imports Decline Signals Cooling Demand

The drop in New Zealand’s imports to $6.73 billion for January is a clear signal of slowing domestic demand. This is the largest month-over-month decline we have seen in over a year, suggesting the economy is cooling faster than anticipated. We should interpret this as a leading indicator for a weaker first-quarter GDP.

This data directly impacts our view on the New Zealand dollar, making short positions more attractive. A weakening economy increases the probability that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will cut interest rates. We should consider buying NZD/USD put options or establishing short positions in the futures market to capitalize on this expected decline.

The import figures reinforce other recent data, such as the latest ANZ Business Outlook survey which showed confidence falling to -15. Looking back at early 2025, a similar combination of weak import data and falling business confidence preceded a 3% drop in the NZD over the following two months. We expect a similar pattern to emerge now.

We believe the market will begin pricing in RBNZ rate cuts much sooner than the previously expected third quarter. This makes positioning for lower interest rates a priority in the coming weeks. Traders should evaluate entering interest rate swaps to pay floating and receive fixed rates, anticipating that future rate settings will be lower.

Equity Market Hedging Considerations

This also has bearish implications for the New Zealand stock market, as lower consumer demand will eventually translate to weaker corporate earnings. We see value in using index derivatives to hedge against or profit from a potential downturn. Purchasing put options on the NZX 50 index is a straightforward strategy to employ in this environment.
