New Zealand CPI Seen Below RBNZ Forecast as Swaps Price Further Rate Rises, Supporting NZ Dollar

New Zealand’s Q2 headline CPI is expected at 1.4% q/q against the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) projection of 1.6%, compared with 0.9% in Q1. On an annual basis, CPI is seen at 4.0% y/y versus the RBNZ’s 4.2% forecast, up from 3.1% in Q1. With inflation remaining above target and domestic growth expectations firmer, the backdrop points to further monetary tightening beyond the July policy move.

Market pricing in swaps implies 50 bps of hikes by year-end and 100 bps of tightening over the next 12 months, taking the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to 3.50%. That would place the policy rate near the top of the RBNZ’s estimated neutral range of 2.20% to 4.10%. At its 8 July meeting, the RBNZ lifted the OCR by 25 bps to 2.50%, its first increase in three years, and signalled that additional rises were likely at upcoming meetings.

RBNZ’s Hawkish Outlook and the Case for NZD Strength

As we navigate the market in late July 2026, we see strong reasons to position for a stronger New Zealand Dollar in the coming weeks. Recent economic data shows that New Zealand’s inflation remains stubborn, prompting the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) to maintain a hawkish stance. With consumer price index (CPI) growth continuing to hover above the central bank’s target range, further interest rate hikes are highly likely.

To back this view, we look at the current pricing in the swaps market, which is discounting significant tightening over the next twelve months. Historically, when the RBNZ embarks on a aggressive hiking cycle, the NZD tends to outperform its peers, especially against currencies where central banks are pausing. For derivative traders, this environment creates a prime opportunity to buy NZD call options or enter long positions on NZD/USD.

Strategies for Capitalizing on NZD Momentum

We also recommend monitoring short-term interest rate futures, as any upward surprises in domestic growth will rapidly push yields higher. Volatility is expected to rise ahead of the upcoming policy meetings, making structured option plays like bull call spreads highly attractive. By leveraging these strategies now, we can capitalize on the upward momentum of the Kiwi dollar while limiting our downside risk.
