New York Fed Survey Shows Rising Near-Term Inflation Expectations as Households’ Finances Weaken

The New York Fed’s September Survey of Consumer Expectations indicated US households see near-term inflation rising, even as longer-horizon expectations imply some cooling that still leaves price growth above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. One-year-ahead inflation expectations increased to 3.9% in September from 3.6%, the highest level since May 2023, while three-year expectations edged up to 3.3% from 3.2%. Over five years and beyond, expectations were unchanged at 3%.

The survey attributed the lift in inflation expectations to shifts in commodity prices. Labour market expectations were described as broadly positive. By contrast, households reported weaker perceptions of their financial situation: larger shares said they were worse off than a year earlier and expected to be worse off a year from now.

Interest Rate Derivatives and Yield Curve Outlook

With short-term inflation expectations climbing to 3.9% in the latest September survey, we believe derivative traders must prepare for a prolonged period of tight monetary policy. Recent consumer price index data shows that core inflation has remained sticky, which heavily limits the Federal Reserve’s room for rate cuts in the final quarter of 2026. We expect this environment to keep short-term Treasury yields elevated and highly sensitive to upcoming economic releases.

To position for this outlook, we should focus on short-term interest rate derivatives, such as Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) futures and options. Historically, when consumer expectations spike, short-term yields react quickly, often leading to a flatter yield curve as long-term expectations stay anchored at 3%. We can look to utilize options spreads to capture the volatility in these interest rate markets without taking on excessive directional risk.

Commodity and Retail Opportunities

Since the rise in inflation expectations is driven by shifting commodity prices, commodity derivatives present another crucial area for strategic placement. Energy and agricultural futures have experienced notable upward momentum recently due to global supply constraints. We can look to implement bullish option strategies on crude oil or broad commodity indices to benefit from this ongoing momentum in raw material costs.

Finally, the decline in household financial confidence suggests that consumer spending will likely soften in the coming weeks. We should consider purchasing put options on consumer discretionary exchange-traded funds or retail indices to hedge against a potential drop in retail sales. Historical trends indicate that when consumer financial sentiment deteriorates, retail equities consistently underperform the broader market.
