Mexican peso holds near decade highs as US yields ease and Iran sanctions shift cools risk appetite

The Mexican peso held near 10-year highs on Tuesday, with USD/MXN below 16.95 and last at 16.94, as markets weighed US data and US–Iran developments. Mexico’s current account posted an $8.9 billion surplus in Q2 2026, reversing a revised $18.23 billion deficit in Q1. In the US, softer Treasury yields pressured the dollar, with the US Dollar Index (DXY) down 0.08% at 98.90. Geopolitical risk also shaped trading after sources cited by Axios said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated Washington is shifting from strikes to sanctions on Iran and is not expected, for now, to launch new strikes.

US indicators were mixed: the Conference Board Consumer Confidence index missed forecasts, though August assessments of current business conditions improved modestly alongside better perceptions of the jobs market. Building Permits rose in July, while the ADP Employment Change four-week average exceeded the prior week’s reading. Boston Fed President Susan Collins maintained a hawkish stance on inflation, even as she described growth near trend and labour conditions consistent with full employment; attention now turns to core PCE ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole, with Durable Goods Orders, GDP and Initial Jobless Claims also due.

Derivative Trading Strategies for USD/MXN Volatility

With the Mexican Peso hovering near ten-year highs and the USD/MXN pair trading tightly around 16.94, derivative traders have a prime setup to exploit near-term volatility. We recommend option traders look at short-dated put spreads on USD/MXN to capitalize on the persistent downward momentum. Since the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is hovering near 31, indicating oversold conditions, we should prepare for minor technical bounces before the downtrend resumes.

Fundamental Rationale and Tactical Positioning

The fundamental backing for the Peso remains incredibly robust, driven by Mexico’s lucrative interest rate differential. Historically, Banxico has maintained its policy rate significantly higher than the US Federal Reserve, with spreads often exceeding 500 basis points over the last few years. This massive yield gap continues to incentivize the MXN carry trade, making long-peso derivative positions highly attractive for yield-seeking investors.

Our bullish outlook on the Peso is further cemented by solid macroeconomic data, including Mexico’s impressive Q2 2026 current account surplus of $8.9 billion. Additionally, foreign exchange inflows are bolstered by resilient remittance levels, which historically reached record highs of over $63 billion annually and continue to provide a solid liquidity floor. We can leverage these strong fundamentals by writing covered call options on USD/MXN to capture premium while the pair remains capped below the 17.33 resistance level.

In the coming weeks, we must keep a close eye on the upcoming Core PCE data and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s highly anticipated speech at Jackson Hole. If US inflation data surprises to the upside, it could spark a temporary rally in the USD/MXN toward the descending trend line barrier near 17.36. We view any such corrective bounces as high-probability entry points to establish fresh short positions, targeting an eventual move toward the historical structural support floor near 15.49.
