Korean stocks slump fuels demand for won downside hedges as foreign outflows accelerate

South Korean equities sold off sharply, pushing demand higher for KRW downside hedges, according to MUFG. The KOSPI extended its decline by 5.5% to 6,035, with losses concentrated in semiconductor stocks as markets digested concerns about cheaper Chinese competition and the durability of AI-related capital expenditure. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix led the move, alongside weakness in US semiconductor shares and reports of progress in memory-chip technology at China’s CXMT.

In derivatives, KRW risk reversals moved further towards paying up for protection against won depreciation. The shift in pricing coincided with US$3.3bn of foreign equity outflows from South Korea in the latest session, which translated into underlying KRW selling as proceeds were converted into foreign currency.

Positioning For Further KRW Weakness

We should position for further foreign exchange weakness by using USD/KRW call options or buying downside put protection on the won over the coming weeks. With risk reversals shifting heavily toward foreign currency calls, option markets are pricing in prolonged won weakness as foreign capital leaves Seoul. Historically, during similar memory-chip downturns in late 2022, heavy foreign net selling pushed USD/KRW above the 1,400 level, a pattern that could repeat if tech outflows persist.

We recommend derivative traders capitalize on the elevated implied volatility skew across South Korean currency contracts. As demand for won downside hedges reaches multi-month highs, structured options strategies like put spreads can reduce the elevated cost of downside protection. Recent market statistics show single-day capital flight exceeding $3.3 billion, confirming that FX depreciation is backed by heavy institutional selling.

Strategic Equity Hedging Amid Semiconductor Weakness

On the equity front, we should maintain tactical short positions in tech-heavy index futures or buy put options on key semiconductor exporters. The global memory chip sector is facing dual pressures from China’s CXMT expanding its domestic production capacity and growing market skepticism around the return on massive AI investments. Given that foreign investors recently pulled over $6 billion from South Korean technology shares during broader market pullbacks, hedging equity exposure against further KOSPI drops remains essential.
