Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on Wednesday that authorities stand ready to take necessary steps in the foreign exchange market if required, while declining to comment on specific currency levels. Her remarks came as she described the US-Iran situation as having grown very challenging.

In market moves, USD/JPY was down 0.02% on the day at 163.15 at the time of writing. The comments did not provide detail on timing or the form of any potential action, and no target levels were indicated.

Currency Intervention Risks and Market Preparedness

We are seeing USD/JPY hover near historical highs of 163.15, putting the Japanese Ministry of Finance on high alert for direct currency intervention. Looking back at historical actions, such as the massive 9.8 trillion yen ($62 billion) intervention in mid-2024 when the yen hit previous lows, we know authorities will act aggressively if the currency depreciates too quickly. We expect a similar, sudden market sweep in the coming weeks to defend the yen, making long-dollar positions highly risky.

To prepare for this, we recommend derivative traders buy out-of-the-money USD/JPY put options to profit from a sudden drop in the currency pair. Current options data shows that short-term implied volatility is relatively cheap, offering an attractive entry point for long volatility strategies like straddles. We suggest targeting option expiries of two to four weeks to capture the high likelihood of official intervention during this period of extreme pressure.

Geopolitical Tensions and Yen Safe-Haven Flows

The worsening geopolitical situation between the US and Iran adds another layer of risk, which could drive sudden safe-haven flows back into the Japanese currency. While rising energy prices from Middle East tensions usually hurt the yen, a severe geopolitical shock could trigger a rapid unwinding of short-yen carry trades. We believe maintaining strict risk limits and using options instead of spot trading is the safest way to navigate this volatile environment.
