Gold Trades Below $4,300 as Hawkish Fed and Elevated Yields Keep Pressure on Bullion

Gold (XAU/USD) stayed rangebound in Asia on Friday, hovering near the week’s low and remaining below $4,300 as the US Dollar paused after climbing to a nearly two-month high. Policy signals kept the USD supported: Fed commentary after the September rate hike leaned towards further tightening, while a private survey showed US business activity at its highest since July 2021 and input prices near a four-year high. The yield on the US 10-year Treasury held near levels last seen in July 2007, reinforcing pressure on non-yielding bullion even as the dollar’s advance took a breather.

Geopolitics continued to underpin demand for the greenback, with uncertainty around the US-Iran conflict and renewed regional tensions adding to energy-price inflation risks, including discussion of a possible 90-day US diesel export ban. In technical terms, gold maintained a bearish bias below the 50.0% retracement of the June–August rise and the 200-period SMA on the four-hour chart; 38.2% sits at $4,408 and the SMA at $4,417, while RSI is near 42. Key levels include $4,231 at 61.8%, $4,105 at 78.6%, and a prior low area near $3,945, with resistance at $4,320 and $4,408–$4,417; the FXS Speechtracker scored 7.2/10 versus a 6.2/10 average, and the FXS Fed Sentiment Index slipped 0.18 to 148.63 versus a neutral 100.

Trading Strategy and Sentiment Outlook

We suggest derivative traders focus on short positions for Gold (XAU/USD) or purchase put options as the metal slips below $4,300. A highly hawkish Federal Reserve and elevated Treasury yields are putting heavy pressure on non-yielding assets. With the US Dollar Index remaining strong near two-month highs, the near-term outlook for gold points downward.

Our bearish view is supported by the Fed Sentiment Index holding strong at 148.63, far above the neutral 100 level. Historically, gold shares a strong negative correlation of about -0.80 with the US Dollar Index when interest rates stay high. With business activity and input costs rising at their fastest pace in years, the Fed has plenty of reason to keep rates high.

Impact of Geopolitics and Technical Levels

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are also helping the US Dollar instead of gold, as traders seek the ultimate liquidity of the greenback. Potential bans on diesel exports and the threat of conflict keep oil prices high, which only adds to the inflation that the Fed is trying to fight. We expect this environment to keep Treasury yields near multi-year highs, capping any potential gold rallies.

For options and futures trading in the coming weeks, we recommend watching the key support level at $4,231. A confirmed break below this point could open the door for a quick drop toward $4,105 and eventually $3,945. Meanwhile, we should view any brief rallies up to the $4,320 resistance area as ideal opportunities to establish new short positions.
