Gold steadied on Monday after opening weaker and briefly dipping below $4,400 in Asian hours, a low last seen on 19 August. XAU/USD was near $4,436 at the time of writing, having peaked at $4,697 last week, but momentum remained capped as markets leaned towards a higher-for-longer Federal Reserve stance. The metal fell about 3.20% on Friday after comments at the Jackson Hole Symposium drove the US Dollar and front-end US Treasury yields higher, while the CME FedWatch tool showed a 61% implied chance of a September hike versus about 38% beforehand. The US Dollar Index (DXY) eased to around 99.58 from 99.72, yet the 10-year yield rose to roughly 4.75%, its highest since January 2025.

Gold was still tracking a gain of around 10% in August, aided by the US Treasury’s plan to double liquidity-support buybacks of longer-dated bonds. Elsewhere, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Oil jumped about 3% to around $85.60 a barrel as Middle East tensions lifted inflation risks. Technically, XAU/USD slipped back below the 200-day SMA at $4,529; the RSI cooled to around 55 and MACD edged under its signal line. Support sits at the 100-day SMA at $4,370 and the 50-day SMA at $4,211, with $4,000 below, while resistance includes $4,529 and $4,700. Central banks added 1,136 tonnes of gold worth about $70 billion in 2022, the highest annual purchase on record.

Trading Strategies in a Volatile Gold Market

We believe derivative traders should prepare for heightened volatility in gold futures and options as the market digests the hawkish shift from the Federal Reserve. Given that gold has slipped below its 200-day Simple Moving Average of $4,529, we recommend prioritizing short positions or buying put options with a downside target near the 100-day SMA at $4,370. Historical market data shows that when gold breaches this key long-term moving average on rising rate expectations, it frequently faces an additional 3% to 5% downward draft over the following weeks.

Risk Management Amid Geopolitical and Inflation Pressures

However, because surging Middle East tensions and WTI oil prices near $85.60 present sudden upside inflation risks, we must protect our portfolios against sharp reversals. To exploit this highly uncertain environment, we suggest employing long strangle options strategies by buying both out-of-the-money calls and puts. This setup allows us to profit from massive price swings regardless of whether geopolitical fear or hawkish interest rates win the market’s tug-of-war.

We should also closely monitor the upcoming US nonfarm payrolls and ISM PMI data, as a strong economic showing will likely push the September rate hike probability past its current 61% mark. If the 10-year Treasury yield climbs past its current 4.75% level toward the psychological 5.0% mark, gold will likely face intense liquidation pressure. We advise keeping stop-loss orders tight on all spot and futures positions to avoid getting caught on the wrong side of these high-impact economic releases.
