Gold steadies above $4,550 as softer dollar and Fed rate outlook support bullion

Gold traded just above $4,550 in Europe after touching its highest level since early June, with price action supported by a softer US Dollar and a break above the 200-day SMA. Markets pared expectations of an immediate Fed rate rise after last week’s US inflation data hinted at cooling pressures, leaving the dollar near a more than three-month low reached on Thursday and underpinning non-yielding bullion. Oil-led inflation concerns, linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi claims of attacks on eight tankers since a late-July maritime blockade, helped lift crude to a three-week high on Thursday and kept US bond yields elevated, reducing the impact of the Treasury’s plan to double some long-dated buyback operations.

Fed policy signals remained in focus after minutes from the 28–29 July FOMC meeting indicated officials were leaning towards raising rates soon without further disinflation progress, while the CME FedWatch Tool implied a 68% chance of at least one hike by year-end. Technically, gold is holding above the 200-day SMA and traders are watching the 61.8% Fibonacci level, with MACD positive and RSI (14) at 67.70. A sustained move above the 61.8% retracement at $4,529.03 could target $4,687 and then $4,889; supports sit at $4,514.16, near $4,417, then $4,306.50, about $4,168, and $3,946.

Derivative Trading Approach And Technical Considerations

We suggest derivative traders prepare for heightened volatility as gold holds its ground above the key $4,550 level. While the technical breakout above the 200-day Simple Moving Average is highly encouraging, the Relative Strength Index is currently hovering near 67.70, signalling that the market is flirting with overbought territory. Therefore, we should avoid chasing the market at these exact highs and instead wait for minor pullbacks before entering new long positions.

To manage risk effectively, we advise focusing on the crucial 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level at $4,529 as a pivot point for short-term derivative strategies. A sustained hold above this support level could justify buying call options or establishing long futures positions targeting the $4,687 mark. Conversely, if the price drops below the 200-day SMA at $4,514, we should pivot to defensive strategies or look for short-term put options.

Geopolitical Risks And Market Sentiment

We must closely monitor the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20 million barrels of oil per day, or roughly 20% of global consumption. With shipping disruptions driving oil prices higher, persistent inflationary fears are keeping the U.S. Dollar supported on dips and capping gold’s immediate upside. Derivative traders should consider using long-straddle or strangle options strategies to benefit from sharp, sudden breakouts triggered by these geopolitical headlines.

Market sentiment remains highly sensitive to monetary policy, with the CME FedWatch Tool currently pricing in a 68% probability of another rate hike by the end of the year. This expectation of sustained high interest rates historically dampens the appeal of non-yielding assets like gold, creating a direct tug-of-war with its safe-haven status. We recommend keeping position sizes conservative in the coming weeks to easily navigate these sudden shifts in rate expectations.
