Gold rose more than 2% on Thursday after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said he would back holding rates steady if inflation continues to cool, while still leaving scope for another increase should data run hotter than expected. XAU/USD was trading at $4,487, as the US Dollar softened amid renewed Middle East tensions and market chatter around possible action to support the Japanese Yen. US indicators sent mixed signals: Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending 29 August edged up to 206K from 204K, slightly above the 205K forecast, while ISM Services PMI climbed to 55.4 from 54.1, beating the 54.3 consensus.

Cost pressures also firmed, with ISM Prices Paid rising to 72.6 from 70.3, the highest since August 2022. Rate pricing adjusted accordingly, with money markets putting the probability of a 25 basis point move at the 16 September meeting at 54%, versus 46% for no change, according to Prime Terminal. Attention turns to remarks from Cleveland Fed’s Beth Hammack and Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls: August employment is expected to rebound from -23K to 56K, while the Unemployment Rate is seen at 4.1%, unchanged. Technically, gold has reclaimed $4,400; resistance levels include $4,500 and the 200-day SMA at $4,533, while support is seen at $4,400, the 100-day SMA at $4,358, $4,300 and the 50-day SMA at $4,232.

Trading Volatility and Options Strategies Heading Into Key Data

We are seeing an incredible surge in gold prices to $4,487 after dovish remarks from Fed Governor Christopher Waller dampened rate hike expectations. This rally is heavily supported by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a weaker US Dollar, pushing the metal past key resistance levels. With the critical Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report releasing today, we expect massive volatility that derivative traders must prepare for immediately.

Currently, money markets show a tight split with a 54% chance of a September rate hike and a 46% chance of a pause. To capitalize on this uncertainty before the September 16 meeting, we recommend traders utilize straddle or strangle option strategies to profit from sharp swings regardless of the direction. Historically, gold options implied volatility tends to spike by 15% to 20% in the days leading up to highly contested Fed decisions.

From a technical perspective, if gold successfully clears the psychological $4,500 barrier, the next clear target is the 200-day Simple Moving Average at $4,533. Derivative traders should consider buying short-term call options with strike prices near $4,550 to capture this potential momentum. Conversely, setting tight stop-losses near the $4,400 support level will protect capital in case stronger-than-expected jobs data triggers a sharp pullback.

Long-Term Factors and Institutional Support

We must also look at the broader picture, where central bank gold buying continues to provide a massive long-term floor for prices. World Gold Council data shows that central banks have consistently purchased over 1,030 tonnes of gold annually in recent years, reinforcing this historic bull run. This structural institutional backing means any short-term dips in gold futures should be viewed as buying opportunities rather than a change in the primary bullish trend.
