Gold hits three-month high above $4,600 as Treasury buybacks curb yields and weaken dollar

Gold extended its rally after a choppy prior week, lifting XAU/USD to a three-month high above $4,500 and later touching $4,600, helped by a softer US Dollar as markets pared the chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike. Geopolitical headlines briefly reversed momentum, while the 30-year Treasury yield rose to its highest level in nearly two decades, before the US Treasury Department unexpectedly said it would double the size of some long-dated debt buyback operations to support liquidity. As yields fell, bullion broke above $4,500 for the first time since early June, then consolidated, and finished the week at a fresh 12-week high above $4,600 after PMI surveys pointed to healthy private-sector activity.

The focus shifts to Monday remarks from Treasury chief Scott Bessent, then to Wednesday data including a second estimate of annualised Q2 GDP and July PCE inflation, with core PCE expected at 0.2% month on month; the CME FedWatch Tool implies about a 35% probability of a 25 bps hike next month. Technically, $4,500 is reinforced by the 200-day SMA and the Fibonacci 38.2% retracement, with RSI nearing 70; resistance sits at $4,675-$4,700 and $4,850, while support is seen at $4,410-$4,400 and $4,300-$4,280. Separately, Bitcoin briefly touched $70,000, and central banks added 1,136 tonnes of gold worth around $70 billion in 2022.

Gold Trading Strategies and Technical Outlook

We are seeing a major breakout in the gold market as prices surged past the key $4,500 level to touch a new high of $4,600. This rally is heavily fueled by the US Treasury’s unexpected plan to double its long-term bond buybacks, which has sharply lowered yields. We advise derivative traders to lean heavily into long positions, specifically targeting call options with strike prices near the next major resistance band of $4,675 to $4,700.

To put this momentum in perspective, central bank gold buying has been exceptionally strong, with the World Gold Council reporting global net purchases consistently exceeding 1,000 tonnes annually. This massive institutional demand provides a solid floor for our bullish outlook, making deep retracements unlikely without a major shift in monetary policy. For those trading gold futures, keeping stop-loss orders just below the $4,500 support mark will protect capital while allowing room for the uptrend to run.

Risks, Data Events, and Volatility Plays

We must remain highly alert to upcoming economic data next week, particularly the US core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index. A monthly inflation reading higher than the expected 0.2% could quickly revive rate-hike fears and trigger a sharp downward correction. If this data pushes gold back below the crucial $4,500 threshold, we should pivot our strategy toward buying short-term put options targeting the $4,400 level.

Additionally, we are closely monitoring the upcoming Jackson Hole Symposium, where Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s stance on inflation could inject sudden volatility into the US Dollar. Coupled with rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and threats of new sanctions against Iran, energy prices could spike and complicate the market dynamics. We recommend using volatility-based derivative strategies, such as long straddles, to capitalize on these sharp price swings regardless of the direction the market takes.
