Eurozone August headline inflation rises as core cools, keeping euro under pressure near 1.1595

Eurozone preliminary Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) inflation for August printed at 3.3% year-on-year, in line with expectations and up from 2.9% previously. On a monthly basis, it rose 0.4%, accelerating from 0.2% in the prior reading.

Core HICP, which excludes food, energy, alcohol and tobacco, eased to 2.4% year-on-year from 2.5% and came in below forecasts. Month-on-month, core prices increased 0.2% after being flat in July. In markets, EUR/USD was 0.2% lower at around 1.1595 at the time of reporting.

Implications for Eurozone Monetary Policy and FX Markets

We suggest derivative traders prepare for increased volatility in Euro-denominated pairs as the divergence between rising headline inflation and cooling core inflation complicates the European Central Bank’s (ECB) next move. Although headline inflation ticked up to 3.3%, the drop in core HICP to 2.4% indicates that underlying price pressures are actually easing. This mixed bag is keeping the Euro under pressure, with EUR/USD slipping toward the 1.1595 mark despite the initial data release.

To capitalize on this trend, we recommend focusing on short-to-medium-term EUR/USD put options to hedge against further downside pressure on the Euro. Historically, when core inflation drops while headline inflation rises due to volatile components like energy, central banks tend to prioritize the cooling core, which opens the door for further rate cuts. With the US Federal Reserve keeping its benchmark rates steady to combat its own persistent economic signals, this policy gap should continue to push the Euro lower against the US Dollar.

Opportunities in Interest Rate and Equity Index Derivative Markets

In the interest rate derivative markets, we should position for a decline in Euribor futures yields. Since core inflation is down to 2.4%—moving closer to the ECB’s official 2.0% target—investors are likely to price in a higher probability of a rate cut in the coming weeks. This trend mirrors historical easing cycles where falling core inflation served as a primary green light for the central bank to lower borrowing costs.

For traders seeking non-directional setups, we see a strong opportunity in buying straddles on the Euro Stoxx 50 index options. The uncertainty of rising energy prices, which pushed headline inflation to 3.3%, combined with slowing consumer demand, will likely trigger sharp swings in European corporate shares. Implementing these volatility strategies now will allow us to profit from sudden market movements, no matter which direction the market ultimately takes.
