Euro slips versus dollar as ECB holds rates, markets weigh September hike odds

EUR/USD fell 0.3% to 1.1377, with the euro weakening against the US dollar even after the European Central Bank kept policy rates unchanged at its July meeting in a unanimous decision. The pair ended the session at 1.1377 versus 1.1412 previously, extending losses despite President Christine Lagarde acknowledging that some policymakers had raised the question of whether to act immediately.

Lagarde said the ECB would assess incoming data in the weeks ahead while maintaining a meeting-by-meeting approach. Bloomberg characterised the remarks as pointing towards a bias for further tightening, and September is widely viewed as a potential window for another move, supported by new quarterly staff forecasts, inflation readings for the prior two months and additional economic indicators including business surveys, with renewed conflict in the Middle East also cited as a backdrop.

Outlook For Derivative Traders Amid ECB Policy Uncertainty

We suggest that derivative traders should prepare for increased volatility in the EUR/USD pair over the next few weeks following the ECB’s latest decision to hold rates. Since the Euro recently slipped to 1.1377 despite hints of a September rate hike, short-term put options could protect against further near-term downward pressure. This temporary dip offers a strategic entry point for those looking to build long positions before the next central bank decisions.

Strategic Positioning Ahead Of Key Eurozone Economic Data

Historically, implied volatility for EUR/USD options tends to rise by 10% to 15% in the four weeks leading up to crucial September ECB meetings. We recommend utilizing bull risk reversals—selling out-of-the-money puts to fund the purchase of out-of-the-money calls—to capture the potential upside if the ECB tightens policy. This setup aligns with recent Eurozone economic data, where core inflation remains sticky at around 2.8%, keeping the pressure on policymakers to act.

We must closely monitor the upcoming August inflation prints and purchasing managers’ index (PMI) surveys, which will heavily influence the ECB’s September choice. Standard currency futures can also be used to lock in current rates, especially since the market is currently pricing in a 60% probability of a September rate hike. If upcoming economic data surprises to the upside, we expect a rapid upward repricing of the Euro toward the 1.1500 level.
