EUR/JPY fell on Wednesday as the yen strengthened across the board and markets speculated about Japanese FX intervention. The cross slid to around 183.64 after earlier reaching 185.75, and was last seen near 184.03, down over 0.89%. The yen also rose abruptly against the US Dollar, while US equity indices traded in positive territory even as tensions in the Middle East stayed elevated. Oil eased but remained near weekly highs, with West Texas Intermediate holding around the $90.00 threshold.

On the technical side, EUR/JPY was quoted at 183.97, maintaining a mildly bearish bias while staying below resistance at 184.15 and beneath clustered simple moving averages around 184.81. The Relative Strength Index (14) softened to about 43, and the next trend-line barrier was placed near 189.44. Further resistance was described around the 50-, 100- and 200-period moving-average confluence near 184.81, while downside support was identified at 174.16. Separately, at the G20, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda to act appropriately on monetary policy, and warned that extreme volatility could lift US Treasury yields.

Derivative Trading Strategies Amid FX Intervention Risks

We advise derivative traders to brace for heightened volatility in Yen crosses over the coming weeks as Japanese authorities show a strong willingness to intervene. The sudden drop in EUR/JPY from 185.75 to 183.64 highlights how quickly the market can turn when intervention fears are triggered. To protect portfolios, we should prioritize short-term put options on EUR/JPY to capitalize on sudden downside spikes while limiting overall capital risk.

With WTI crude oil hovering above $90 a barrel, Japan’s trade balance remains under pressure, keeping the Bank of Japan highly sensitive to further Yen weakness. Historically, when oil prices rise alongside a weak Yen, the Ministry of Finance has stepped in aggressively, as seen in their massive 9.8 trillion yen intervention back in 2024. We should use this historical precedent to prepare for sharp, state-backed rallies in the Yen if EUR/JPY tests recent highs again.

Technical and Fundamental Considerations for EUR/JPY

From a technical perspective, EUR/JPY is showing fading upside momentum with its RSI dropping to 43 and the price staying below the 184.15 resistance. We recommend trading this pair using barrier options or vertical bear spreads, targeting the major support level down near 174.16. Because implied volatility is bound to spike on further intervention rumors, buying volatility straddles could also yield strong returns in this high-stress environment.

The latest comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defending efforts to support the Yen suggest a coordinated international eye on currency stability to prevent extreme volatility. If Japanese 10-year government bond yields continue to creep up past 1.0% to combat import inflation, the fundamental pressure on EUR/JPY will shift further downward. We must closely monitor the Bank of Japan’s upcoming policy announcements, as any hawkish policy shift will accelerate this bearish trend.
