EIA Reports Surprise US Crude Stock Build, Prompting Bearish Options Bias for WTI

US Energy Information Administration data for the week of 17 July showed crude oil inventories rose by 2.011m barrels. Markets had been looking for a 1.5m-barrel draw, so the release came in above expectations.

The surprise build points to looser near-term balance than forecast for that reporting week. It also contrasts with the implied tightening that a draw of the expected size would have suggested.

Bearish Recommendations For Derivative Traders

We recommend that derivative traders pivot to bearish strategies in the coming weeks following the surprising crude oil inventory build. The market expected a draw of 1.5 million barrels, but the actual build of 2.011 million barrels shows that supply is outstripping demand during the peak summer driving season. This bearish surprise is likely to drag down West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, which has recently struggled to hold above $78 a barrel.

Strategies And Market Outlook

To profit from this downward momentum, we suggest buying near-term put options or setting up bear call spreads on crude futures. July typically sees heavy inventory draws as refineries run at over 92% capacity to meet vacation travel demand. This sudden build suggests that either domestic fuel demand is faltering or refinery runs are unexpectedly slowing down.

We should also monitor the crude oil volatility index (OVX) for a spike as the market adjusts to this unexpected supply glut. If next week’s data confirms this trend, we expect WTI to test major support levels near $72 a barrel. Using defined-risk options strategies right now allows us to capture the downside while protecting our capital from sudden geopolitical headlines.
