EIA gas storage build undershoots forecasts, bolstering Henry Hub futures as supply tightens

US Energy Information Administration data showed a 30B natural gas storage change for the week to 28 August, undershooting market expectations of 31B. The 1B gap points to a marginally tighter storage build than forecast for the period.

The release indicates inventories rose, but by less than anticipated, with the reported 30B increase compared with the 31B consensus. The figures capture the weekly balance between injections and withdrawals and are watched for near-term supply–demand conditions in the US gas market.

Bullish Signals and Futures Trading Strategies

We see a strong bullish signal here as the tiny 1 billion cubic feet injection is well below the five-year average of around 50 billion cubic feet for this time of year. Derivative traders should immediately look to buy October and November Henry Hub natural gas futures to ride this upward momentum. We expect near-term prices to test key upper resistance levels as market tightness becomes more apparent over the coming weeks.

To manage risk while capturing this upside, we recommend purchasing out-of-the-money call options on winter contracts. Historical data shows that when late-summer injections miss forecasts by this margin, winter risk premiums expand rapidly. Implied volatility is likely to rise, making long option positions or bull call spreads highly attractive right now.

Spread Strategies and Market Drivers

We also suggest entering bull calendar spreads, specifically buying October contracts and selling December contracts, to exploit the immediate supply deficit. The underlying tightness is driven by record-high power burn from late-August heatwaves and steady LNG export demand, which has been hovering near 13 billion cubic feet per day. This supply-demand mismatch means any further deficit in the coming weeks will likely trigger a sharp short squeeze.
