The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded near 53,600 on Thursday, up 0.29% after moving from around 53,300 to just above 53,700. Salesforce rose close to 20% on a second-quarter revenue beat, while Nvidia gained close to 7.5% on results that included a fiscal 2028 growth forecast. Under the DJIA’s price weighting, at roughly six index points per Dollar, the two stocks imply close to 350 points of upside, yet the index captured about 157 points as the other 28 constituents subtracted close to 200 points. After initial jobless claims printed 203K versus a 208K consensus and 207K prior, with continuing claims at 1.78 million, the DJIA rebounded about 390 points into a 15:15 GMT high just above 53,700.

At Jackson Hole, remarks at 11:30 GMT scored hawkish at 7.0 versus a 7.1 average, the 12:15 GMT speech was neutral at 6.0, and the 14:30 GMT slot scored hawkish at 8.0 against a 7.5 average. Separately, a report said the administration is weighing broader semiconductor duties extending to laptops, gaming hardware and data centre servers; January’s action set 25% on certain advanced computing chips while exempting data-centre-bound parts. Friday at 14:00 GMT brings the Fed Chair keynote and the preliminary benchmark revision, after 818K and then 911K were removed in the past two rounds; nearby releases include Chicago PMI at 13:45 GMT (57 consensus versus 57.6 prior) and final Michigan sentiment at 51 and expectations at 50.6, with one-year inflation expectations at 4.3% and five-year at 3.3%. Technical markers cited resistance just above 53,700, then 53,800, 54,100 and just short of 54,750; support near 53,300, then 53,000, with the 50-day EMA near 52,700, while Stoch RSI stands at 39 and a daily close above 53,800 is the stated invalidation level.

Positioning for Bearish Pullback and Volatility

We should position ourselves defensively by purchasing near-the-money put options on the Dow Jones Industrial Average near the 53,700 resistance level. Despite massive earnings beats from Salesforce and Nvidia, the remaining twenty-eight stocks are actively dragging the index down. This exhaustion at key resistance, combined with a falling daily Stochastic RSI at 39, suggests a bearish pullback is highly likely in the coming weeks.

We need to prepare for sudden market swings by buying straddles to capitalize on tomorrow’s macroeconomic data releases. Historically, late August and September are the most volatile periods of the year, with the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) rising by an average of 15% during this season. The upcoming payroll revisions and Jackson Hole speeches will likely act as a sharp catalyst for this expected volatility.

Hedging and Relative Value Trade Opportunities

We recommend hedging our exposure to AI-dependent stocks by buying protective puts on high-flying tech names. The newly proposed administration duties on data center servers threaten to shift heavy costs directly onto the buyers of artificial intelligence hardware. Similar supply chain tariff announcements in the past have led to immediate 5% to 10% pullbacks in tech sector valuations.

We can also exploit the performance gap between the Nasdaq and the Dow by trading relative value option spreads. The price-weighted Dow is struggling to keep pace, running at only a quarter of the tech-heavy benchmark’s gains today. Buying calls on the Nasdaq while simultaneously buying puts on the Dow allows us to profit from this widening divergence.
