USD/JPY extended Wednesday’s rise, up 0.36% to around 158.90, pressing towards 159.00 near its September peak after firmer US inflation data strengthened the Dollar and shifted expectations for Federal Reserve policy. September CPI, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed headline inflation at 3.7% year on year versus 3.4% in August, while core CPI rose to 2.6% from 2.4%; on the month, headline and core were up 0.6% and 0.3% respectively. Rate pricing adjusted quickly, with the implied probability of a 25-basis-point hike in October rising to 53% from 22% a day earlier, and the December odds moving to 50% from 18%. The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed towards 5.33% from about 5.20%, while DXY gained 0.55% to roughly 102.75, its highest since April 2025.

The Yen stayed soft after weaker Japanese PPI data and cautious Bank of Japan messaging ahead of its October meeting, keeping the policy gap in focus. On the hourly chart, USD/JPY traded near 158.95, above the 100-period SMA at 158.31 and the 200-period SMA at 158.16, with RSI (14) near 71.9. Resistance was flagged at 159.00; supports were cited at 158.45, then 158.31 and 158.16, with further levels at 157.85, 157.00 and 156.50, while proximity to 159.00 also raised renewed intervention risk.

Momentum Strategies and Risk Controls

We suggest derivative traders capture strong bullish momentum while maintaining strict risk controls as USD/JPY approaches 159.00. With US 10-year Treasury yields reaching 5.33% and US headline inflation accelerating to 3.7%, call options and long positions remain attractive. However, with the hourly Relative Strength Index reaching overbought territory at 71.9, we should wait for brief pullbacks toward the 158.45 support level before opening new long trades.

We must prepare for severe downside volatility as the pair nears levels that historically triggered direct currency intervention from Tokyo. During similar rallies in 2024, Japanese authorities spent over 9.8 trillion yen ($62 billion) to prop up the Yen after it crossed above 155.00 and approached 160.00. To hedge against sudden intervention spikes, derivative traders can use defined-risk structures like bull call spreads or buy out-of-the-money protective puts.

Carry, Profit Taking, and Volatility Management

The widening monetary divergence between a tightening Federal Reserve and a cautious Bank of Japan provides solid fundamental support for carry-oriented strategies. We recommend taking partial profits on existing long contracts near 159.00 while trailing stop-loss orders just below the 100-period moving average at 158.31. Options traders can also take advantage of rising implied volatility by selling covered call options against long derivative positions to generate extra income.

As market expectations for an October Fed rate hike jump to 53%, derivative positioning should adapt quickly to incoming macroeconomic data releases. Any verbal warnings from Japanese finance officials regarding excessive volatility could swiftly trigger short-term liquidations. We should keep overall leverage lower than usual in the coming weeks to manage the dual risks of aggressive Fed rate hikes and sudden Japanese intervention.
