Dollar Index eyes 99 as softer US data lifts euro, yen and global yield rebound hopes

Softer US data last week pushed the Dollar Index lower, with 99.40 flagged as a near-term floor; a break could pull it towards 99 or below. In FX, the euro is pointed at 1.16 and EURJPY towards 185-186, while the yen and yuan are seen targeting 158 and 6.70. The Aussie and sterling are pegged at 0.7120 and 1.36-1.37, and USDJPY is framed as biased lower while the Dollar Index stays under pressure. In India-linked pairs, EURINR has moved above 110.40 with 111 in view, while USDINR is described as prone to a dip below 95.50 towards 95.20.

Rates have rebounded: US Treasury yields lifted off their support zone and German yields rose sharply, with a renewed uptrend implied if they extend gains. India’s 10-year GoI yield is holding above support, though the note points to a potential break lower after a period of narrow trading. Equities are mixed, with the Dow seen drifting towards 53,000 within a 53,000-55,000 band; the DAX needs 26,500 to target 27,000-27,500. In Asia, the Nikkei is pitched towards 70,000 and beyond, while Shanghai’s 3,950 resistance keeps 3,875-3,850 in play on weakness. Commodities are framed as range-driven: Brent $80-$95 and WTI $75-$90; gold above $4,200 targets $4,600 if $4,500 breaks, silver $70-$75, copper $6.50 to $6.80 then $7.00, and natural gas support near $2.60 with bounce potential to $2.75-$2.80.

Derivative Strategies For Currencies

We suggest derivative traders position for continued dollar weakness in the coming weeks as softer US economic data continues to pressure the greenback. The Dollar Index is flirting with a breakdown below 99.40, a level last threatened when cooling inflation sparked rate cut expectations, which could quickly drag it down to 99.00. To capitalize on this trend, we recommend buying out-of-the-money call options on the Euro targeting 1.16 and EURJPY calls aimed at the 185 to 186 range.

For Asian currency pairs, we favor long positions on the Yen and Yuan with derivative targets of 158 and 6.70 respectively, especially as recent central bank interventions support local currencies. In the exotic space, traders should look to buy USDINR put options below 95.50 to play a move toward 95.20, while simultaneously buying EURINR calls targeting 111. This dual strategy aligns with the broader theme of non-US currencies showing resilient momentum against a weakening greenback.

Rates, Equities, And Commodities: Tactical Trade Ideas

In the debt markets, we advise taking payer positions on US and German interest rate swaps as treasury yields bounce off critical support zones. This rebound mirrors historical patterns where yields surged following short-term stabilization, suggesting the broader bullish trend for global yields remains intact. Conversely, we expect Indian 10-year government bond yields to break support and fall due to strong foreign inflows, making receiver swaps or long bond futures a smart play.

Global equity markets present a highly fragmented landscape, requiring traders to adopt highly selective options strategies. We recommend buying protective puts on the Dow Jones as it drifts down toward 53,000, while targeting bullish call spreads on the Nikkei up to 70,000. Meanwhile, traders should focus on DAX call options only if the index holds firmly above 26,500, targeting a run toward 27,500.

In commodities, we believe gold derivatives are a strong buy above $4,200 with call options targeting $4,600, bolstered by historic central bank purchasing trends which recently hit record highs. For silver and copper, traders should look for tactical long positions targeting $75 and $6.80 respectively as industrial demand stabilizes. Finally, energy traders should employ range-bound strategies like short strangles on Brent between $80 and $95, as crude prices remain locked in a tight corridor.
