DBS Sees MAS Steepening SGD NEER Slope in October as AI-Driven Growth Supports Dollar

DBS Group Research expects the Monetary Authority of Singapore to slightly steepen the SGD NEER policy band slope at its October review, while keeping the band’s width and centre unchanged. The case for calibrated tightening is tied to import cost pressures and resilient growth, aligned with the broader global monetary policy stance.

The team expects the 3Q26 advance GDP estimate, due with the MAS decision, to show growth of 5.4% year on year and 1.4% quarter on quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis, easing from 5.9% year on year and holding at 1.4% quarter on quarter in 2Q26. Momentum is described as being driven by AI-led trade activity that supported manufacturing and wholesale trade, while financial sector strength underpinned resilience in modern services. This followed a moderation in transport and storage, alongside weakness in consumer-facing food services and retail.

Currency Derivatives Strategy Amid MAS Policy Tightening

With the Monetary Authority of Singapore expected to slightly steepen the SGD NEER slope in its upcoming October review, we anticipate a stronger Singapore Dollar in the coming weeks. This calibrated tightening, backed by a robust third-quarter GDP growth forecast of 5.4% year-on-year, signals that the domestic economy remains incredibly resilient. Derivative traders should position themselves for continued currency appreciation, especially against currencies where other central banks are actively cutting rates.

We recommend utilizing currency options, such as buying call options on the Singapore Dollar, to capture this upward momentum. Historically, similar slope steepening decisions, like those seen during the inflationary surge of late 2022 when the currency strengthened significantly, have driven immediate nominal effective exchange rate appreciation. Locking in forward contracts now allows us to hedge against volatility ahead of the official advance GDP release.

Equity-Based Derivative Opportunities and Risk Management

Because Singapore’s economic strength is currently anchored by artificial intelligence trade and a robust financial sector, equity-based derivatives present another strong opportunity. We can look to buy call options on local index futures to ride the wave of this AI-driven manufacturing boom. This allows us to gain leverage on the resilient modern services cluster without committing large amounts of capital directly.

While the outlook is bullish, we must protect our portfolios against sudden shifts in global import cost pressures. Placing tight stop-losses on short USD/SGD derivative positions will help mitigate risks if the central bank decides to hold steady instead. Balancing our currency plays with tech-heavy equity derivatives will give us the most flexible setup for the volatile weeks ahead.
