China’s exports and factory gauges rebound, lifting industrial metals and yuan-linked derivative outlook

China’s exports are expected to rise 25.7% year-on-year in September, driven by sustained electronics demand, while both the official and Caixin manufacturing PMIs moved back above the 50 expansion threshold, signalling firmer factory activity. External trade gauges also improved: average daily deadweight tonnage processed at China’s 20 major ports shifted from -0.7% year-on-year in August to 7.2% in September, and international cargo flight growth turned from -1.4% to 3.6% over the same period.

Price indicators point to a rebound in upstream costs, with the main raw material purchasing price subPMI increasing from 56.6 to 60.8 and the producer price subPMI rising from 50.4 to 54.0. Downstream consumer price pressure is still expected to stay muted under the pricing-band mechanism, leaving CPI inflation forecast to edge up from 0.8% year-on-year in August to 1.0% in September, against a backdrop of soft domestic demand.

Opportunities In Commodities And Currency Markets

We advise derivative traders to position for continued upward momentum in industrial commodities and metals over the coming weeks. With China’s raw material purchasing price index surging to 60.8 and producer price sub-PMIs climbing to 54.0, input costs are rising sharply. Historically, when China’s official manufacturing PMI holds above 50 alongside raw material sub-indexes topping 60, industrial metals like copper and iron ore have seen average gains of 5% to 8% over the following quarter, making long futures or call options attractive setups.

We also see compelling opportunities in foreign exchange derivatives, particularly favoring currency futures linked to a stronger Yuan. A massive 25.7% expansion in export growth alongside port throughput turning around from -0.7% to +7.2% demonstrates powerful trade dynamics that typically bolster foreign exchange inflows. Traders can consider put options on USD/CNH to capitalize on currency strength, keeping in mind that mild domestic inflation at 1.0% leaves scope for policy calibration.

Equity Index Strategies And Risk Management

Finally, we suggest utilizing bull call spreads on major tech and industrial equity indices to capture upside momentum while limiting risk. Strong demand in the electronics cycle, reflected in international cargo flight activity jumping to 3.6%, highlights clear sector-specific tailwinds for exporters. Because geopolitical tensions continue to drive volatility in raw material costs, maintaining straddles or protective puts on supply-chain-heavy contracts remains a prudent risk-management step.
