Canadian Dollar slides as US-Canada trade talks collapse; USD/CAD rises on tariff escalation fears

The Canadian Dollar weakened as trade talks between the US and Canada collapsed, pushing USD/CAD up 0.52% to around 1.3830 on Monday. After negotiations broke down on Friday, the US imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian products, while Canada said it would retaliate “dollar for dollar” from September 8. Separately, Donald Trump announced tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel would rise to 50% from January 1, 2027, adding to uncertainty for an economy closely tied to US trade flows.

Oil-linked support for CAD may come from Washington’s plan to broaden secondary sanctions on Iran, with details due from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday, according to Reuters. The shift could target activities in specific Iranian sectors and pressure trading partners by linking compliance to access to the US Dollar-based financial system. The move follows nearly six months of disruption to the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf energy exports, which, if intensified, could lift Oil prices and limit further USD/CAD gains. Technically, USD/CAD was at 1.3829, capped below 1.3846, with the 100-period SMA at 1.3929 and the 200-period SMA at 1.4009; RSI hovered around 53, while support sat near 1.3732.

Strategies For Navigating USD/CAD Volatility Amid Trade Tensions

We believe derivative traders should position for heightened volatility in the USD/CAD pair as the September 8 retaliation deadline draws near. Buying short-term USD/CAD call options allows us to capitalize on sudden spikes if trade relations deteriorate further. During the 2018 trade disputes, similar tariff threats caused the Canadian Dollar to slide by about 8% against the greenback, a historical trend we could easily see repeat.

At the same time, we must account for rising oil prices, which could limit the Canadian Dollar’s losses due to new US sanctions on Iran. Because Canada is a top energy exporter, a sudden surge in crude oil often boosts the CAD, potentially capping USD/CAD gains below the 1.3929 resistance mark. To navigate these conflicting forces, we suggest utilizing straddle or strangle option strategies to profit from sharp moves in either direction.

Hedging For 2027 Auto Tariff Risks And Key Technical Levels

The threat of a 50% tariff on Canadian autos is massive, considering the sector accounts for over $100 billion in annual trade between the two nations. We advise purchasing long-dated USD/CAD call options expiring in early 2027 to hedge against the January tariff deadline. Currently, option implied volatility is relatively low, presenting a cheap window to lock in these protective positions.

From a technical perspective, we should closely monitor the 1.3846 resistance line and the 1.3732 support floor. If the pair breaks above 1.3846, we should immediately increase our long exposure toward the 1.4000 level. Any pullbacks toward the 1.3732 support should be treated as a strong buying opportunity for USD call options.
