BSP Holds Policy Rate as Expected, Peso Options Volatility Eases and Swap Yields Steady

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas kept its policy rate unchanged, a decision that matched market expectations. The move maintained monetary settings as officials assessed domestic inflation dynamics and broader financial conditions, while signalling continuity in the stance guiding bank funding costs and credit growth.

The decision left key rates steady at their existing levels, with the policy corridor and liquidity operations remaining in place. The central bank reiterated its focus on keeping inflation within target over the policy horizon, while monitoring external risks that could affect the peso, import prices and inflation expectations.

Implications For Currency And Interest Rate Derivatives

We suggest that derivative traders closely watch the Philippine Peso (PHP) and interest rate swaps following the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) decision to hold or adjust rates in line with market consensus. With the central bank maintaining a predictable path, implied volatility in PHP currency options is expected to decline in the near term. We recommend taking advantage of this stabilization by selling short-term options to capture premium decay.

Historically, when the BSP acts in line with expectations, the PHP tends to trade within a tight range against the US dollar, often clustering near the 56.00 to 57.00 level. This consolidation suggests that range-bound derivative strategies, such as iron condors or short straddles on USD/PHP, could be highly profitable over the next few weeks. We should also look at the interest rate swap (IRS) market, where yields are stabilizing as inflation pressures ease toward the BSP’s 2% to 4% target range.

Outlook For Equity Derivatives

For traders looking at equity derivatives, the predictability of monetary policy provides a supportive backdrop for the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi). We expect call options on major financial and property index heavyweights to gain traction as lower borrowing costs begin to boost corporate earnings. Position sizing should remain disciplined, however, as any unexpected global macroeconomic shifts could quickly spill over into emerging market assets.
