Bank Negara Malaysia holds rates at 2.75% as guidance turns hawkish amid commodity-driven inflation risks

Bank Negara Malaysia held the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75% and adjusted its communication towards a tighter bias, dropping prior wording that policy was “appropriate” and instead framing the stance as “consistent with” price stability and sustainable growth. It also removed July’s view that price pressures would stay contained, and said it would remain vigilant on cost pressures and domestic demand conditions. The shift comes alongside firmer growth and concerns that higher global commodity prices linked to the Middle East conflict could filter into domestic prices and wages, while fuel subsidies continue to cushion the energy shock.

Economic momentum has stayed robust, with GDP growth at 6.0% year on year in Q2 and 5.7% in H1; for 2026, the central bank now sees growth around 5%, near the top of its earlier 4–5% range. Inflation has been contained, with headline inflation averaging 1.8% and core inflation 2.0% over the first seven months of 2026, while projections for 2026 are 1.5–2.5% for headline and 1.8–2.3% for core. USD/MYR slipped 0.1% to 4.0420, has ranged between 3.88 and 4.16 this year, and is seen in a 4.00–4.07 band.

Stronger Malaysian Ringgit: Trading Opportunities

We see a clear opportunity to position for a stronger Malaysian Ringgit in the coming weeks following the central bank’s shift toward a tighter monetary stance. With the Overnight Policy Rate held at 2.75%, the removal of the word “appropriate” from the official policy statement signals that rate hikes are likely on the horizon for late 2026 or early 2027. This hawkish turn is well-supported by Malaysia’s robust second-quarter GDP growth of 6.0% and strong exports, which outpace many regional peers.

We recommend that derivative traders focus on buying USD/MYR put options with strike prices targeting the 4.00 support level. The currency pair is currently trading near 4.04, and we expect it to test the lower end of its estimated 4.00 to 4.07 range as commercial demand for the Ringgit rises. Historically, when the central bank prepares the market for tightening during periods of tech-driven export booms, the Ringgit enjoys sustained upward momentum.

Interest Rate Swaps Positioning Amid Policy Tightening

To capitalize on the expected policy tightening, we also suggest entering payer positions in Malaysian interest rate swaps (IRS). Current short-term swap rates do not yet fully price in a rate hike, offering an attractive entry window before the broader market adjusts. With domestic inflation averaging a benign 1.8% but global commodity risks rising, the local yield curve is poised to shift upward in the near term.
