Baker Hughes US oil rig count beats forecasts, reinforcing supply resilience and capping WTI upside

Baker Hughes reported the US oil rig count at 454, exceeding market expectations of 452. The data point suggests a marginally higher level of drilling activity than forecast for the latest reporting period.

The update places the rig count 2 rigs above consensus, offering a near-term read-through for upstream capacity trends. Baker Hughes provided the figures in its regular US rig count release.

Resilience in US Drilling and Supply Outlook

The unexpected rise in the U.S. oil rig count to 454 shows that domestic drillers are keeping their foot on the gas despite expectations of a slowdown. This higher-than-expected active rig count suggests that domestic production will remain highly resilient, maintaining a strong supply floor in the global market. In the coming weeks, we believe this supply-side resilience will limit any significant upward rallies in West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices.

Historically, U.S. crude production has remained robust near record levels of over 13 million barrels per day even when active rigs hovered around these lower levels, thanks to major drilling efficiency gains. With the latest count beating consensus, we are seeing proof that producers are still highly motivated to maintain output. This persistent supply capacity is likely to cap WTI prices below key resistance levels as global demand remains uncertain.

Positioning for Range-Bound WTI Prices

To capitalize on this, we should position for a range-bound oil market with a slight downward bias in the coming weeks. We recommend selling out-of-the-money call options or using bear call spreads to capture premium as upside momentum stalls. Buying modest put options on crude futures also provides a cheap hedge in case high production numbers trigger a sharper sell-off.
