AUD/JPY slides as yen surges, stoking intervention bets ahead of Bank of Japan decision

AUD/JPY fell on Thursday as the Japanese Yen strengthened sharply across yen crosses, prompting market speculation of official intervention after USD/JPY reached a 40-year high earlier this month. The cross was around 111.70 at the time of writing, down about 1.75% on the session and marking its lowest level since 3 July. USD/JPY dropped nearly 480 pips to below 160, with no confirmation from Tokyo even as officials have warned they stand ready to respond to excessive currency moves, while Reuters reported authorities were considering intervening without warning.

Attention now turns to Friday’s Bank of Japan decision alongside the Tokyo CPI and the Unemployment Rate, with the BoJ widely expected to keep its policy rate unchanged at 1.00%. The Australian Dollar was already under pressure after weaker inflation data: CPI fell 0.1% month on month in June versus expectations for a 0.2% rise, following a 0.7% decline in May. On an annual basis, inflation eased to 3.8% from 4.0%, tempering expectations of a Reserve Bank of Australia rate increase in August.

Yen Volatility and Derivative Strategies

We advise derivative traders to position for heightened volatility in Yen pairs over the coming weeks as sudden Japanese government interventions remain a constant threat. With USD/JPY violently dropping below the 160 mark from its recent multi-decade highs, option traders should consider buying short-term straddles to capitalize on massive, unannounced price swings. Historical data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance shows they spent a record 9.8 trillion yen ($62 billion) in similar interventions during late spring, proving that Tokyo is fully prepared to strike again without warning.

Bearish AUD/JPY Trades and Market Risks

For AUD/JPY, we recommend executing bearish derivative strategies like put options or bear put spreads, targeting a slide below the 111.00 level. Australia’s cooling inflation, which recently dropped to 3.8% annually, has severely dampened the chances of any further rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of Australia. This widening yield gap, combined with the Bank of Japan’s looming policy shift, makes the Australian Dollar highly vulnerable to further liquidations.

Traders should also closely monitor upcoming Tokyo CPI data and unemployment rates to gauge the Bank of Japan’s next moves. Implied volatility in the currency options market has spiked significantly, suggesting that institutional players are actively hedging against a deeper unwinding of the popular Yen carry trade. We suggest maintaining tight stop-losses on any remaining long AUD/JPY positions and utilizing currency swaps to manage the rapidly shifting interest rate differentials.
