Asian currencies buoyed by AI export boom and stable energy supply, led by TWD and KRW

Asian currencies have held up better than many peers, aided by robust AI-related exports and a comparatively less acute regional supply backdrop for oil products such as diesel. The recent pattern contrasts with moves elsewhere and points to support coming from trade-linked demand rather than commodity import stress alone.

Earlier market focus on an unwind of FX carry trades weighed on Latam currencies, but that dynamic has steadied. With that pressure easing, Asia FX is positioned to outperform across a range of scenarios, although performance is expected to vary by pair, with attention on tech-linked currencies including TWD and KRW, and to a lesser extent MYR and SGD.

AI Exports and Energy Stability Offer Tailwinds for Asian FX

We recommend that derivative traders position for continued strength in Asian currencies over the coming weeks as they outshine global peers. This resilience is heavily backed by the ongoing boom in artificial intelligence, which keeps regional export engines humming. By focusing on options and futures that favor Asian FX, we can capitalize on this relative regional stability.

The hard numbers back up this strategy, with South Korea’s semiconductor exports recently surging by more than 30% year-on-year, and Taiwan’s export orders rising for several consecutive months due to AI chip demand. Historically, during global tech upcycles, the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD) and South Korean Won (KRW) show a strong positive correlation with global equity inflows. We should look to buy call options on TWD and KRW against weaker G10 or Latin American currencies.

Another key advantage for Asia is the stable energy supply chain, which contrasts with the tighter diesel and oil market pressures seen in Europe and the Americas. Because regional supply lines for refined petroleum products remain highly secure, Asian economies face fewer inflationary supply shocks. We believe this energy buffer shields regional currencies from sudden downside volatility.

Selective Trade Positioning Amid Shifting Global Capital Flows

While fears of a massive unwind in Latin American carry trades recently dominated global markets, that volatility has now stabilized. This stabilization allows investors to reallocate capital back into Asia, where economic fundamentals are much stronger. We can exploit this shift by taking long positions in the Singapore Dollar (SGD) and Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), which offer steadier returns.

However, because performance will vary across different currency pairs, we must remain highly selective. We suggest using spread strategies or barrier options to manage risks while targeting specific tech-heavy FX pairs. By structuring trades to capture this dispersion, we can maximize gains while protecting our portfolios from unexpected global market swings.
