The US four-week moving average for initial jobless claims rose to 219.5K in the week ending 6 February. It was 212.25K in the prior period.

This is an increase of 7.25K in the four-week average. The figure measures the average number of new unemployment benefit claims over four weeks.

Labor Market Showing Early Cooling

With the four-week average for jobless claims rising to 219.5K, we are seeing the first notable sign of a cooling labor market. This is a clear shift from the stability we observed in the final quarter of 2025, where the average consistently held below 210K. This uptick suggests the resilience of the job market could be starting to fade.

This data directly impacts expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next move. A softer labor market reduces the pressure on the Fed to hold rates higher for longer, and we’ve already seen the market react. The probability of a rate cut by the June 2026 FOMC meeting has now climbed to over 40%, up from around 35% last week, making call options on Treasury futures a more compelling trade.

The conflicting signals between this claims data and last month’s strong payroll numbers will likely increase market choppiness. We should anticipate a rise in volatility from its current subdued levels, with the VIX index trading below 15. This makes purchasing VIX call options or establishing strangles on major indices an attractive strategy to capitalize on bigger price swings.

Dollar Outlook And Positioning

A less aggressive Fed policy outlook tends to weaken the U.S. dollar. This shift in labor data could be the catalyst that pushes the dollar lower against currencies like the Euro and the Yen. Therefore, we should consider positioning for a potential decline by acquiring put options on the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY).
