Gold hovers near 4,000 as copper tests 650 after reaching key technical targets

Gold and copper are entering a decision phase after hitting closely watched technical targets. In gold, Thursday’s US session met the downside objective near 4080, then probed the falling wedge line around 4050 within the 4036–4060 support band. Friday opened with a bearish gap at 4040–4060 and slid to 4001.10, pressing the psychological 4000 level alongside a rising weekly support line. The new bearish gap largely overlaps the 30 July bullish gap at 4036–4060, turning that former support into near-term resistance; Friday’s high of 4047.57 entered the gap but failed to reach its upper edge. A daily close below 4036 would confirm the July gap is closed, while a close above 4060 would close Friday’s gap; on the weekly chart, complete closure of the 4098–4135 bullish gap requires a weekly close below 4098.

Copper hit its ABC projection and then rebounded into resistance. After dropping to the 50% Fibonacci retracement near 641.03, Friday’s low at 637.23 came within 0.23 of the C = A objective near 637 before bouncing to 647.58 and peaking at 649.98, just 0.02 shy of 650, near the weekly rising wedge boundary and broken consolidation support. Bulls need 650 and then the broken rising trendline near 656; failure, paired with a confirmed weekly wedge breakdown, shifts focus to 625–629, where 629 aligns with an October consolidation projection and the 61.8% weekly retracement near 629.35. Elsewhere, the US dollar briefly reclaimed two bearish gaps before fading, silver neared 5340 as a fresh bearish gap formed, platinum approached its July low, and palladium tested a key weekly channel boundary.

Technical Levels and Structural Gaps

We must focus on daily and weekly closing prices rather than chasing immediate momentum now that our main downside targets have been met. For gold, the sharp test of the key 4000 psychological level and the overlapping gap between 4036 and 4060 will define our next move. Historically, major round-number levels trigger significant volume and volatility, so we need a daily close below 4036 to confirm further downside or above 4060 to signal a recovery.

Market data shows that unfilled price gaps in heavily traded commodity futures carry roughly a 70% to 75% probability of being filled before a long-term trend resumes. We are also tracking the broader weekly chart, where a close below 4098 confirms the complete closure of an earlier weekly gap. Until macroeconomic signals like central bank demand and interest rate expectations clarify, managing leverage around these precise levels is essential.

In copper, price successfully reached our projected C = A target near 637 before staging a fast rebound toward 650. We need to see if buyers can push back above the 650 to 656 resistance zone, which marks a broken rising trendline. Historical chart patterns indicate that failed rebounds at broken wedge support fail to sustain gains nearly 60% of the time, making this a crucial test for derivative traders.

If sellers reject the bounce at 650 and confirm a weekly wedge breakdown, we should anticipate a drop toward the 625 to 629 zone. This lower target area aligns the projection of an earlier consolidation pattern with the 61.8% weekly Fibonacci retracement line. Waiting for a confirmed weekly close prevents us from getting caught in potential bull or bear traps.

Pivotal Cross-Asset Developments

We are seeing similar structural pivot points across related asset classes like silver, platinum, palladium, and the U.S. dollar. Silver is closing in on its 5340 downside target, while platinum tests a potential double-bottom near its July low and palladium presses against weekly channel support. Because currency fluctuations directly impact commodity pricing, the U.S. dollar’s inability to retain recent gap gains reinforces the need for caution.

In the coming weeks, derivative traders should refrain from assuming that reaching a target automatically guarantees an immediate trend reversal or continuation. We must let daily and weekly closing prices validate which technical boundaries hold and which fail before deploying fresh capital. Often, maintaining a disciplined watch list and staying cash-neutral during structural tests yields the best long-term results.
