USD/CAD rose on Wednesday, reversing the prior session’s decline as the US Dollar pushed to a fresh year-to-date high after firmer-than-expected US inflation data. The pair was trading near 1.4287, up 0.50% on the day and close to 18-month highs. September CPI increased 0.6% month on month, above August’s 0.4%, while annual headline inflation accelerated to 3.7% from 3.4%, topping the 3.6% forecast. Core CPI rose 0.3% on the month versus 0.2% expected and held at August’s pace, as the annual core rate moved up to 2.6% from 2.4%, exceeding the 2.5% forecast.

Markets repriced Federal Reserve policy expectations, with pricing implying around a 50% chance of a rate rise at the 27-28 October meeting versus 22% previously, and a 95% probability of a December increase. The US Dollar Index climbed towards 102.80, its strongest level since April 2025, while the 10-year US Treasury yield approached 5.30% after dipping below 5.20% earlier in the week. Canada’s policy backdrop remained softer, with the Bank of Canada holding rates at 2.25% this year, leaving US rates 150-175 bps above, and attention turning next to US PPI and retail sales due Thursday.

Trading Strategies For USD Strength Against CAD

We recommend derivative traders position for continued strength in the US Dollar against the Canadian Dollar by using long call options or bullish spread strategies. With annual headline US inflation rebounding to 3.7% and core inflation remaining sticky at 2.6%, the Federal Reserve is under mounting pressure to keep policy restrictive. Historically, when the interest rate spread between the US and Canada widens beyond 150 basis points, the Greenback sustained multi-month rallies against the Loonie.

Traders should consider utilizing interest rate futures to price in higher terminal US policy rates ahead of the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting. Money markets have swiftly repriced the probability of a December Fed rate hike to 95%, driving the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield up toward 5.30%. Meanwhile, the Bank of Canada remains anchored at a 2.25% policy rate, creating an aggressive yield divergence that favors holding US assets over Canadian ones.

Managing Downside Risk And Commodities Exposure

For those managing downside risk, purchasing volatility protection or short-dated put spreads on Canadian assets can help hedge against further currency depreciation. Upcoming US Producer Price Index and retail sales data will likely trigger short-term swings, making straddles an effective play for volatility traders. Historically, during periods where the US Dollar Index breaks above major resistance levels like 102.80, spot and options markets experience prolonged momentum that heavily penalizes counter-trend positions.

We advise cautious management of commodity-linked derivative exposure, particularly in crude oil futures and options. While elevated oil prices typically bolster the commodity-linked Canadian Dollar, macro data shows that monetary policy spreads currently exert twice as much influence on USD/CAD price action as energy markets. Staying long on US Dollar call options while maintaining tight stop losses around critical support levels near 1.4200 offers a structured way to capture further upside potential.
