Gold (XAU/USD) fell on Wednesday after US inflation data pushed the US Dollar and Treasury yields higher. The metal was trading near $4,102, down 1.41% on the day. September CPI rose 0.6% month on month, up from 0.4% in August, while headline inflation accelerated to 3.7% year on year from 3.4%, above the 3.6% forecast. Core CPI increased 0.3% on the month versus 0.2% expected, and the annual core rate ticked up to 2.6% from 2.4%, beating the 2.5% forecast. The Dollar Index (DXY) climbed to about 102.67, its highest since April 2025, and the 10-year yield added roughly 10 bps to 5.28%.

Higher energy prices linked to Middle East tensions were cited as an ongoing inflation driver, raising the risk of inflation staying above the Fed’s 2% target. Money markets increased pricing for three more rate hikes by end-2027, with a 43.7% chance of a move at the October 27-28 meeting versus 22% previously, and December odds near 90%, per CME FedWatch. Technically, XAU/USD held a $4,100-$4,200 range, trading below the 50-, 100- and 200-day SMAs; RSI sat around 42 and MACD was slightly positive. Resistance levels were flagged at $4,200, $4,249, $4,337, $4,400 and $4,525, with support at $4,100 then $4,000-$3,950.

Derivative Trading Outlook

We advise derivative traders to lean toward a cautious, short-to-neutral bias on gold over the next few weeks as higher yields pressure non-interest-bearing assets. With US headline inflation accelerating to 3.7% annually and 10-year Treasury yields reaching 5.28%, holding gold carries a high opportunity cost right now. Historically, whenever benchmark yields push above 5% during hawkish Fed cycles, precious metals struggle to maintain sustained upward momentum.

We recommend watching the key $4,100 support level closely for potential breakout short positions or bearish options strategies like bear put spreads. A clean breakdown below $4,100 could quickly trigger systematic technical selling down toward the $4,000 to $3,950 support region. Traders looking to sell rallies should target initial resistance near $4,200, which aligns with the 100-day simple moving average at $4,249.

Currency and Safe-Haven Dynamics

In currency and interest rate derivative markets, we should stay aligned with the rising US Dollar index, which recently hit multi-month highs near 102.67. Rate futures now price in a 43.7% probability of an October rate hike and nearly a 90% chance for December, giving short-term momentum to the Greenback. Long US Dollar positions against lower-yielding currencies remain an attractive strategy while energy prices continue to push overall inflation higher.

However, we must remain agile because ongoing Middle East tensions and elevated crude oil costs could keep a floor under gold as a safe-haven asset. Historically, persistent energy shocks can trigger sudden risk-off rallies even during aggressive monetary tightening cycles. Using strict risk limits around key resistance barriers like the 50-day moving average at $4,337 will be crucial to managing unexpected upside volatility.
