Gold steadies as ETF inflows hit records and Fed hike bets cap rebound near $4,217

Gold’s fundamental backdrop remains mixed as of 12 October 2026, with XAU/USD drawing moderate support from a weaker US dollar, geopolitical uncertainty and expectations around Federal Reserve policy. Market pricing implies a 17% chance of a Fed rate rise in October, while the probability is put at 86% by December. The World Gold Council said global gold ETFs took in USD 10bn in September and, over July–September, inflows hit a record USD 31bn. Total holdings rose to a record 4,256 tonnes, alongside continued central bank buying and reserve diversification efforts aimed at reducing reliance on the US dollar.

Technically, the H4 chart shows an upward corrective wave within a broader medium-term downtrend, with the rebound reaching USD 4,217 before a pullback and consolidation. A further dip towards USD 4,160–4,150 is flagged as the nearest support zone, while resistance sits at USD 4,234 and then USD 4,255 if the recovery resumes. The bearish medium-term path still points to USD 4,093 and USD 4,027. On H1, the break above USD 4,141 preceded a move to USD 4,217, but momentum has since softened; support at USD 4,146 is in focus, with USD 4,067 and USD 4,027 below if it fails.

Strategic Outlook and Institutional Demand

We suggest derivative traders prepare for two-way volatility in gold over the coming weeks as strong institutional demand clashes with aggressive Federal Reserve expectations. In the immediate term, we should watch the key support zone between $4,150 and $4,160 for signs of stabilization before entering tactical long positions. Holding this area opens the door for a recovery move back toward the $4,217 resistance level.

If buyers can clear the $4,217 barrier, we should anticipate extended upside momentum toward $4,234 and potentially $4,255. Record-breaking demand, evidenced by $31 billion in third-quarter ETF inflows and global holdings reaching 4,256 tonnes, shows that institutional investors are actively building defensive positions. Historically, massive fund inflows combined with central bank buying tend to cushion gold against deep sell-offs during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

Trading Cautions and Tactical Considerations

However, we must remain cautious because the broader medium-term trend still favors sellers. If price action breaks firmly below $4,146 support, we recommend shifting focus toward short opportunities targeting $4,093, $4,067, and $4,027. Market pricing currently reflects an 86% probability of a Fed rate hike by December, which could reinvigorate dollar strength and pressure non-yielding assets.

For trade execution, short-term indicators like the hourly Stochastic oscillator confirm that a localized pullback is currently underway. We advise waiting for price consolidation beyond either $4,146 or $4,217 before placing larger breakout bets ahead of crucial US inflation data. Keeping stop-loss orders tight and adjusting position sizes will help us navigate sharp price swings in this dynamic macro backdrop.
