Fed minutes signal further tightening as AI demand risks stoke inflation, dollar index holds firm above 102

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s 15–16 September meeting show unanimous backing for a 25-basis-point increase, lifting the fed funds rate to a 3.75%–4.00% range, and most officials judged another rise would probably be appropriate by year-end. Policymakers said inflation remained elevated and the labour market was close to full employment, with inflation risks seen as tilted to the upside and, for some, more pronounced recently. Several participants also flagged the possibility that an AI investment buildout could push aggregate demand ahead of supply, adding price pressure, while staff revised the economic outlook stronger than in July.

Financial conditions were judged supportive of growth despite higher long-term Treasury yields, and some officials said the Treasury market was functioning smoothly while urging readiness for episodes of stress. In markets, the US Dollar Index held above 102.00 and later traded around 102.50 after gaining about 3.4% over four weeks to an 18-month high. Futures pricing pointed to a 20% chance of an October hike and an 80% chance of at least one hike before year-end; another gauge showed 78% odds of no change later this month and about an 85% chance of a hike before year-end. Data cited included GDPNow at 3.7% annualised Q3 growth versus 2.2% previously, with 0.2% MoM cited as consensus for September core CPI.

Dollar Strength Outlook And Trading Strategy

We should prepare for continued US Dollar strength in the coming weeks as the greenback holds firm above the 102.00 level. With the Federal Reserve pointing to upside inflation risks from a resilient economy and heavy artificial intelligence investments, further tightening remains highly likely before the end of the year. Historically, when the central bank maintains a hawkish bias during periods of solid economic growth, the dollar index tends to find strong buying support on any temporary pullbacks.

For derivative traders, this environment favors positioning for a stronger dollar against major rivals, particularly with the US Dollar Index currently testing resistance near 102.50. We can look to exploit short-term dips toward the 101.80 support zone by using call options or long futures contracts to capture the next leg up. If the index breaks above 102.50, the next major technical targets lie near 103.20, which aligns with key historical chart barriers.

Rate Expectations And Key Economic Triggers

While current futures pricing shows only a 22% chance of a rate hike in the upcoming October meeting, an 80% probability of a December move keeps the medium-term outlook bullish. Recent economic indicators, such as the third-quarter GDPNow estimate accelerating to 3.7%, suggest that the underlying economy is robust enough to handle higher borrowing costs. We should look to employ range-bound strategies on treasury-related derivatives to capitalize on the expected October pause before positioning for a December rate hike.

The next crucial triggers for our trading setups will be the upcoming consumer and producer price index releases. If the core consumer price index prints at or below the expected 0.2% month-on-month pace, it will solidify the October pause and potentially offer a cheaper entry point for long-dollar positions. On the other hand, any hotter-than-expected inflation data will likely supercharge expectations for a year-end rate hike, driving immediate volatility across global currency and bond derivatives.
