Markets eye BoJ October report as yen weakens and futures price one-in-four hike odds

Overnight-rate futures imply the Bank of Japan has roughly a one-in-four chance of hiking on 30 October, even after Governor Kazuo Ueda said it will keep raising rates. The policy gap has been stubborn: the Federal Reserve lifted its range to 3.75%–4.00% on 16 September and the BoJ moved to 1.25% on 18 September, leaving a 2.75 percentage-point spread unchanged before and after both quarter-point steps. The yen has weakened after each move, with USD/JPY near 160.00 when the BoJ lifted rates to 1% on 16 June and just below 164.00 by late July, before the Ministry of Finance intervened on 30 July alongside US support the next day. After the 18 September hike, passed 7–2, the pair was near 157.00 and reached 159.00 within a week.

Attention is shifting to the BoJ’s 29–30 October report, where the market will look for guidance on pace rather than the decision itself. Tokyo core CPI rose 2.7% YoY in September versus 1.8% in August and a 2.4% forecast, while the measure excluding fresh food and energy increased 3%, a 13-month high, even as a gasoline subsidy was raised. Reuters sources said the report may bring forward the timing for underlying inflation reaching 2%, compared with a July projection spanning October 2026 to March 2028, compressing an 18-month window. Futures price a 26% chance of an October hike, most of one move by December, and a policy rate of 2.02% by September 2027.

Technical Levels And Short-Term Yen Dynamics

We should closely monitor the 157.00 support level on USD/JPY as we head into the crucial central bank meetings later this month. The currency pair has been consolidating between 156.50 and 159.00, hovering right around its 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages near 158.00. A sustained daily close below 157.00 could signal a deeper slide toward 155.00 and potentially the September low of 153.00.

The market currently prices in only a 26% chance of a Bank of Japan rate hike on October 30, but underlying economic data suggests policymakers are under pressure to act. Tokyo’s core inflation jumped to 2.7% in September, comfortably beating forecasts of 2.4% despite government gasoline subsidies. If we see the BoJ’s upcoming quarterly report pull forward its timeline for sustainable 2% inflation, it could trigger a rapid repricing of the Yen.

Right now, the interest rate differential heavily favors the Dollar, with the Federal Reserve’s benchmark rate sitting at 3.75%-4.00% compared to the BoJ’s 1.25%. Because this 2.75 percentage point gap remains wide, traders have continued to use the Yen as a cheap funding currency. However, if the BoJ signals back-to-back rate hikes in January and March rather than its current slow pace, this yield gap will shrink much faster than the market expects.

Event Risks And Derivative Strategies

We must also prepare for the Federal Reserve’s policy decision on October 28, just two days before the BoJ announces its own plans. While futures markets show only a one-in-five chance of a Fed rate hike following September’s modest payroll growth of 29,000, any surprise move from Washington will instantly alter the currency gap. The upcoming US inflation data on October 14 will be the first major catalyst to reshape these interest rate expectations.

For derivative strategies in the coming weeks, we favor looking for short positions on USD/JPY if the pair breaks below 157.00, targeting a move down to 153.00. If the BoJ fails to signal a faster hiking pace on October 30, we should pivot and expect a swift return to 159.00 and potentially 160.00. We will invalidate our bearish Yen bias if USD/JPY consistently trades above the 159.00 resistance mark.
