Gold Struggles Below $4,150 as Hawkish Fed and Surging US Yields Cap Gains

Gold (XAU/USD) edged up but held just below $4,150 into Tuesday’s European session, still close to Monday’s drop towards $4,100, its lowest area since August 4. A hawkish Federal Reserve stance has supported the US Dollar near a two-month high and, alongside elevated US bond yields, kept bullion capped. Earlier this month the Fed delivered a 25 bps rise, and influential FOMC members have flagged the possibility of another increase before end-2026; CME Group’s FedWatch Tool shows a 70% probability of an October move. Separately, Fed Cook’s FXS Speechtracker score was 7/10 versus a 6.9/10 baseline, while the FXS Fed Sentiment Index fell 0.63 to 146.89, still above the neutral 100.

Geopolitical risk remains in focus after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iran peace proposal and denied offering sanctions relief or releases of frozen funds, keeping oil supported and adding to inflation concerns. Treasury yields extended higher, with the 30-year at its highest since mid-May 2004, the 10-year since mid-June 2007, and the 2-year since May 2024. Markets are also watching Wednesday’s PCE Price Index and final Q2 GDP, Thursday’s ISM Manufacturing PMI, and Friday’s NFP. Technically, gold has broken below the 200-day EMA at $4,310, with the 61.8% retracement at $4,227 overhead; MACD is at 26.21 and RSI at 36.40. Resistance levels include $4,316, $4,406, $4,517 and $4,696, while support sits at $4,099 and $3,937.

Technical Outlook and Trading Strategies

We see gold struggling to hold the $4,150 level as a hawkish Federal Reserve and a dominant US Dollar keep the precious metal near multi-month lows. Because the price has slipped below the critical 200-day Exponential Moving Average at $4,310, the technical path of least resistance remains downward. We suggest derivative traders hold off on buying call options until gold can establish a firm base above the $4,227 mark.

US Treasury yields are applying massive pressure, with the 10-year yield hovering near levels not seen since the June 2007 peak of around 5.3%. This high-yield environment dramatically increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets, driving investors toward the safety of the greenback. To profit from this trend, we recommend utilizing bearish option strategies, such as buying puts targeting the immediate support floor at $4,099.

Geopolitical and Economic Influences

Geopolitical risks remain elevated after the rejection of the Iranian peace proposal, which has kept crude oil prices high and fueled fresh inflation fears. This dynamic supports the central bank’s aggressive stance, with the CME FedWatch Tool showing a strong 70% probability of another rate hike in October. We advise using long volatility strategies like straddles to navigate the sharp price swings expected from these ongoing global developments.

A heavy schedule of US economic data this week, including the PCE price index and Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls, will likely dictate gold’s next major move. If inflation metrics surprise to the upside, we expect a rapid drop toward the key technical support level at $3,937. Derivative traders should keep position sizes small and maintain strict risk management parameters ahead of these high-impact releases.
