Mexican peso slips towards 18 per dollar as US-Iran headlines and yields lift greenback

The Mexican peso weakened on Monday as risk appetite deteriorated following mixed headlines on US-Iran talks, with reports of an impending deal later contradicted by officials. USD/MXN traded at 17.99, up 1.80%, while higher US Treasury yields supported the dollar; the US Dollar Index (DXY) was up 0.14% at 101.17. Separately, US President Donald Trump rejected an Axios report that Washington had offered sanctions relief and the unfreezing of Iranian assets. The Middle East situation remained unresolved, even as Iran’s foreign minister was due to meet mediators in New York.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook flagged ongoing inflation pressures linked to AI and regional hostilities. In Mexico, Banxico Governor Victoria Rodríguez said recent peso moves were consistent with existing inflation projections that still point to inflation easing towards the 3% target, and she avoided giving guidance on the reference rate. She also said policy would not respond mechanically to changes in the Fed funds rate. Markets priced a 92% probability of Banxico holding rates at 6.50% at the 5 November meeting. On the charts, USD/MXN moved above the 200-day SMA at 17.41, with the RSI above 70; resistance levels cited were 18.00, 18.16, 18.53, 18.77 and 19.00.

US Dollar Strength and Peso Weakness Drive Trading Opportunities

We are seeing a significant shift in the currency markets as the US Dollar strengthens against the Mexican Peso, with the USD/MXN pair pressing against the critical 18.00 psychological barrier. This sudden weakness in the peso is fueled by stalled US-Iran negotiations and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials regarding persistent inflation. With the US Dollar Index (DXY) climbing to 101.17 and US Treasury yields pushing higher, the greenback is capturing strong safe-haven demand.

Options Strategies and Risk Management for Peso Traders

Given this surging momentum, we recommend that derivative traders position for further upside by utilizing USD/MXN call options targeting the 18.16 year-to-date high and the 18.53 resistance level. Since the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has spiked past 70 into overbought territory, buying outright spot carries high immediate risk, making defined-risk options strategies like bull call spreads highly attractive. Furthermore, with implied volatility expected to rise ahead of upcoming US economic data, including the Core PCE and September’s Nonfarm Payrolls, volatility buyers should find opportunities in long straddles.

We must also monitor the shifting interest rate dynamics, especially since market pricing indicates a 92% probability that Banxico will hold its key rate at 6.50% during its November 5 meeting. Historically, when the yield spread between Banxico and the Federal Reserve narrows, the peso loses its carry-trade appeal, similar to the emerging market sell-offs we witnessed in mid-2024. Traders looking to hedge Mexican asset exposure should consider shorting MXN futures to protect against further depreciation toward the 19.00 level.
