CFTC Data Shows Defensive Shift as Sterling and Euro Shorts Grow While Yen Longs Retreat

CFTC data for the week to 22 September showed a shift towards defensive currency positioning, with sterling and euro shorts extending while yen longs were cut. Oil positioning improved even as prices fell sharply, and gold exposure stayed crowded, keeping the broader backdrop cautious rather than directional. Still, several major pairs showed price and speculative flow pulling in opposite directions, leaving parts of the signal unresolved.

In yen, speculative exposure was reduced to nearly 72.0K contracts as USD/JPY revisited the 157.40 area; exposure sat near the 85th percentile and net positioning near the 88th, while follow-through remains the test. In the euro, non-commercial net shorts almost doubled to just over 52.3K contracts and EUR/USD slid to the mid-1.1400s, with exposure around the 8th percentile and net positioning near the 6th. Gold remained the most crowded trade at the 95th percentile, whereas GBP was at the other extreme near the 1st for exposure and near the 2nd on net positioning, implying asymmetric unwind risk versus rebuild potential.

Defensive Positioning And Momentum In Key Currencies

We suggest that derivative traders tread carefully in the coming weeks as defensive currency positioning takes a firmer hold of the market. Since the Japanese Yen and Canadian Dollar show strong alignment between price action and speculative flows, we should watch for continued tactical momentum. However, we must remain cautious of a sudden reversal, as USD/JPY revisiting the 157.40 level could easily turn into a false start if the flow fades.

Divergences, Risks, And Strategic Opportunities

We see significant mismatches in the Euro, British Pound, and Swiss Franc, where price trends and speculative flows are pointing in opposite directions. While Euro net shorts have nearly doubled to over 52.3K contracts, historical CFTC data shows such rapid doubling often precedes high volatility rather than a clear trend. We advise waiting for the next market moves to either validate these flows or expose a deeper divergence.

We believe the risk in Gold is heavily skewed to the downside because long positioning has reached a crowded 95th percentile. Looking at past commodity cycles, crowded longs above the 90th percentile frequently lead to sharp corrections of 5% or more within a few weeks. We should consider tightening our stop-losses or trimming long exposure to protect against a sudden price correction.

Conversely, we see an asymmetric buying opportunity in the British Pound, which is currently the least-owned currency near the 1st percentile. Since there is ample room for speculators to rebuild their positions, a sudden upward price turn could trigger a powerful rally. We recommend monitoring GBP closely for a reversal signal to establish long positions with minimal downside risk.
