Gold under pressure as oil rallies and Fed hawkishness lifts dollar, capping near-term rebound

Gold remained under near-term pressure after briefly dipping below 4,250 before a modest rebound, last seen around 4,275. Higher oil prices following renewed Middle East tensions, together with firm US data and hawkish Federal Reserve remarks, kept rate-hike expectations elevated; the implied probability of an October hike rose to above 70%, supporting a firmer US dollar. Technical signals pointed to mild bearish momentum on the daily chart, while the RSI was flat.

Oil and the rates response were framed as the main swing factors. A pullback in energy prices or a weaker dollar could help gold stabilise, but further rises in yields would keep the bias heavy. Near-term resistance was placed at 4,300–4,354, aligning with the 21, 50 and 100 DMAs, with additional resistance marked at 4,400 and 4,460. On the downside, the next support levels were identified at 4,200 and 4,000.

Drivers Of Downward Pressure And Volatility

We are seeing gold face heavy near-term pressure, briefly dipping below the 4250 mark before staging a minor recovery to trade around 4275. This downward bias is largely driven by a combination of resilient US economic data and escalating Middle East tensions that have pushed Brent crude oil prices back above $82 a barrel. Derivative traders should prepare for heightened volatility in the coming weeks as these macroeconomic factors play out.

The US Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance has significantly bolstered the dollar, with the market now pricing in a greater than 70% chance of an interest rate hike next month. This expectation has pushed the 10-year US Treasury yield up near 4.45%, a level that historically triggers capital outflows from non-yielding assets like precious metals. We suggest closely monitoring these yield movements, as any further upward push will keep gold under intense pressure.

Trading Strategy And Key Technical Levels

For short-term options and futures plays, we recommend focusing on the crucial resistance zone between 4300 and 4354, which aligns with the major moving averages. If gold fails to break above this range, bearish momentum is highly likely to reassert itself. In this scenario, traders could look to establish short positions or buy protective puts targeting the 4200 and 4000 support levels.

On the flip side, we must not rule out range-bound consolidation if energy prices cool or the US dollar index softens. Historical market data shows that when the dollar retreats by even 1.5% during geopolitical pauses, gold quickly regains its footing to test upper boundaries. If the metal manages to reclaim and hold above 4354, we should pivot toward call options targeting the next resistance targets at 4400 and 4460.
