Rupee Recovers as RBI Dollar Sales Cap USD/INR Despite Rising US Yields and Oil Volatility

The Indian rupee gained some ground against the US dollar on Friday after several sessions of weakness, with USD/INR failing to build on moves above 95.96 as the Reserve Bank of India’s intervention was cited. Reuters reported that the central bank likely sold dollars before the local spot market opened, based on comments from four traders, helping the currency hold firmer than the 96-per-dollar threshold. The respite was limited as US Treasury yields continued to rise on elevated energy prices and the Federal Reserve’s higher-for-longer narrative. MCX crude for 19 October was down 2.3% at about Rs. 8,950, though it has risen sharply over the past two trading days, while the 10-year US Treasury yield hovered near a 19-year high of 5.23% set on Thursday.

MUFG said US yields were being driven higher by strong activity data and energy costs, with the US 2-year yield up 14bp to around 4.9%, the 10-year above 5.0% and the 30-year beyond 5.4%. Markets were pricing about 37bp of additional Fed tightening by December 2026, roughly 1.5 rate hikes. In India, August inflation rose to 4.8% year on year, from a revised 4.5% previously, and MUFG flagged a potential 50bp hike in the second half of FY27. Technically, USD/INR was 95.9205, above the 20-day EMA at 95.6104, with RSI (14) near 59.6 and an upside reference near 97.00 if 96.00 breaks.

Derivative Opportunities in Currency and Energy Markets

We recommend derivative traders build long positions on USD/INR using bull call spreads to capitalize on the pair’s upward momentum toward the 97.00 mark. Despite the Reserve Bank of India’s heavy intervention, the underlying bullish trend remains intact as the spot price holds firmly above the 20-day exponential moving average of 95.61. This strategy limits downside risk while allowing us to capture gains once the key resistance level of 96.00 is breached.

With MCX Crude Oil contracts experiencing sharp volatility and trading near Rs. 8,950, we should use long call options on energy derivatives to hedge against imported inflation. India relies on imports for over 85% of its crude oil needs, making the domestic currency highly sensitive to global energy spikes. Buying these energy derivatives will help us offset the negative impact of a weakening rupee on our broader portfolios.

Income and Interest Rate Strategies Amid Central Bank Intervention

For short-term income, we should write USD/INR put options concentrated around the immediate support level of 95.61. The RBI’s aggressive defense of the 96.00 level, supported by India’s foreign exchange reserves of over $680 billion, means steep declines are unlikely to last. This central bank safety net provides us with a high-probability setup to collect premium while the market consolidates.

Finally, we advise taking long positions in domestic interest rate futures ahead of the upcoming October policy meeting. With US 10-year Treasury yields holding near a multi-decade high of 5.23%, the RBI will face intense pressure to protect local debt markets from capital outflows. Betting on a hawkish 50-basis-point rate hike in the coming weeks is a smart way to get ahead of the central bank’s next move.
