What Are Stocks?

Every billion-pound company in the world started with a simple idea: divide ownership into pieces and sell them. Those pieces are stocks and they are the foundation of global financial markets.

A stock is a contract representing ownership of a company, issued in portions called shares, granting the owner a proportional stake in that company’s assets and profits. When you buy stocks, you become a shareholder — a part-owner of the business, entitled to a share of its success.

Stocks are bought and sold on exchanges such as the London Stock Exchange (LSE), the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and NASDAQ with prices fluctuating continuously in response to company performance, economic conditions, and investor sentiment.

How Do Stocks Generate Returns?

Owning stocks offers two distinct paths to profit:

Capital Appreciation

When a company grows — increasing its revenues, expanding its market share, or strengthening its competitive position — its stock price typically rises. Buying stocks at a lower price and selling at a higher price generates a capital gain, which is the most widely pursued form of return in equity markets.

Dividend Income

Many established companies distribute a portion of their profits directly to shareholders in the form of dividends. For income-focused investors, dividend-paying stocks provide a regular cash return on top of any capital appreciation, it making them a cornerstone of long-term wealth-building strategies.

Stocks and Share CFDs — What’s the Connection?

For traders who want exposure to stock price movements without purchasing the underlying shares directly, Share CFDs (Contracts for Difference) offer a powerful and flexible alternative.

Rather than owning the stock outright, a Share CFD allows you to speculate on whether a stock’s price will rise or fall — with the ability to go long or short, trade on margin, and access global stocks from a single platform.

This makes Share CFDs particularly attractive for active traders who want to capitalise on short-term stock price movements across multiple markets without the administrative complexity of direct share ownership, stamp duty, or custody fees.

What Moves Stock Prices?

Understanding what drives stock valuations gives traders a meaningful edge:

  • Earnings reports — Quarterly results that beat or miss analyst expectations can move stock prices sharply in either direction

  • Macroeconomic data — Interest rate decisions, inflation figures, and GDP data influence broad market sentiment and sector-specific valuations

  • Company news — Product launches, mergers, acquisitions, leadership changes, and regulatory developments all impact individual stock prices

  • Market sentiment — Broader risk appetite across global markets affects how aggressively investors allocate capital to equities
