Gross domestic product (GDP) Definition

What Is Gross Domestic Product?

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the total value of all goods and services produced within a country’s borders during a specific period, usually measured over a year or a quarter. It is one of the most widely used measures of the size and health of an economy.

How GDP Is Measured

GDP can be calculated by adding up spending in the economy: consumption, investment, government expenditure and net exports. A rising GDP generally points to an expanding economy, while a falling GDP suggests contraction. Data is often reported both in raw form and adjusted for inflation.

The Main Components of GDP

Component What It Covers
Consumption Household spending on goods and services
Investment Business spending on assets and construction
Government spending Public sector expenditure
Net exports Exports minus imports

Nominal Versus Real GDP

Nominal GDP is measured at current prices, while real GDP is adjusted for inflation so that changes reflect actual output rather than rising prices. Traders usually focus on real GDP growth to judge the underlying pace of an economy.

Interpreting GDP Data

GDP is a backward-looking measure released after the period it covers, so markets may have already moved on newer information. Figures are frequently revised, and a single reading can be misleading without the wider context of other indicators. Reacting to one release in isolation can lead to misjudged conclusions.

Why Traders Watch GDP

GDP releases can influence currencies, indices and interest rate expectations, which is why they feature prominently on the economic calendar. Understanding what the figure measures, and its limits, helps traders read the data with perspective. At VT Markets, traders can follow scheduled economic events as part of staying informed about market conditions.
