Pending order Definition

What Is a Pending Order?

A pending order is an instruction to buy or sell a product at a specified price in the future. Rather than executing immediately at the current market price, a pending order sits inactive until the market reaches the level you’ve set, at which point it triggers automatically.

Common Types of Pending Orders

A buy limit order triggers a purchase once price falls to a specified level, while a sell limit order triggers a sale once price rises to a set level. A buy stop order triggers a purchase once price rises above a certain level, and a sell stop order triggers a sale once price falls below one, each suited to different trading scenarios.

Why Traders Use Pending Orders

Pending orders allow a trader to plan an entry in advance without needing to watch the market constantly, which is particularly useful around anticipated breakouts or pullbacks to a specific level. They also help remove some of the emotional decision-making involved in manually timing an entry in real time.

Pending Orders and Order Expiry

Most platforms allow a pending order to be set with a specific expiry, after which it’s automatically cancelled if not triggered. Without an expiry set, a pending order may remain active indefinitely, which is worth checking before stepping away from a position you intended to be short-term.

Pending Orders Aren’t Always Guaranteed to Fill: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, a pending order can still be affected by slippage in fast-moving markets, meaning the price at which it actually executes may differ from the level originally set. Gaps in price, particularly around major news events or market open, can cause a pending order to fill at a notably different level than intended.

Planning Entries With Pending Orders

Pending orders are one of the more practical tools for planning a trade in advance rather than reacting in the moment. Understanding the different types available, and how they behave around fast-moving conditions, helps you use them as part of a clear, considered trading plan.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
