In-the-money Definition

What Does In-the-Money Mean?

In-the-money, often shortened to ITM, describes an options contract that would be profitable if it were exercised immediately, before accounting for the premium paid. An in-the-money option has intrinsic value because the relationship between the strike price and the current market price favours the holder. The term is central to understanding how options are valued and how their behaviour changes as price moves.

When an Option Is In-the-Money

  • A call option is in-the-money when the market price is above the strike price.

  • A put option is in-the-money when the market price is below the strike price.

  • The further in-the-money an option is, the greater its intrinsic value.

Moneyness Compared

Status Call Option Put Option
In-the-money Price above strike Price below strike
At-the-money Price equals strike Price equals strike
Out-of-the-money Price below strike Price above strike

Intrinsic Value Is Not the Whole Picture

An in-the-money option is not automatically a winning trade. The premium paid to enter the position must be recovered before any net gain, and an option that is in-the-money today can move out-of-the-money if price reverses. Time decay and volatility also affect an option’s overall value, so moneyness is only one factor in the outcome.

Why Moneyness Matters

Understanding when an option is in-the-money is fundamental to reading how options behave and how their value is built. It frames decisions about which contracts to trade and how exposure changes as price moves. For traders learning about derivatives on VT Markets, moneyness provides a clear foundation for interpreting option pricing.
