Front-running Definition

What Is Front-Running?

Front-running is the practice of buying or selling a security based on advance knowledge of a pending transaction by a third party. Someone with information about a large order that is likely to move the price trades ahead of it, seeking to benefit from the expected move. Front-running is widely regarded as unethical and is prohibited in regulated markets because it abuses non-public information.

How Front-Running Works

A party who becomes aware that a large order is about to be placed can position themselves beforehand. For example, knowing that a sizeable buy order will likely push the price up, they buy first and then benefit as the larger order moves the market. The advantage comes from access to information that other participants do not have.

Why Front-Running Is Prohibited

  • It relies on confidential, non-public information

  • It places the third party’s interests ahead of the client’s

  • It undermines fair and orderly markets

  • It is subject to regulatory rules and penalties

Why Front-Running Is Taken Seriously

Front-running damages trust in markets by giving an unfair advantage to those with privileged information. Regulators treat it as a form of market abuse, and firms maintain controls and surveillance to detect and prevent it. Understanding the practice matters not as a strategy, but as an example of conduct that market rules are designed to stop.

Understanding Front-Running

Front-running illustrates why rules around fair dealing and the use of information are central to well-functioning markets. Recognising the practice helps traders appreciate the standards that protect participants and support confidence. Across regulated markets, safeguards against conduct like this underpin the integrity that everyday trading relies on.
