What is a currency pair?

A currency pair is the quotation of one currency against another in the foreign exchange (forex) market. It shows the value of one currency relative to another and is used to determine exchange rates between countries.

In simple terms, a currency pair tells traders how much of one currency is needed to purchase another currency.

Every currency pair contains two currencies:

  • The base currency is listed first.

  • The quote currency is listed second.

For example, in the currency pair EUR/USD, the euro (EUR) is the base currency and the US dollar (USD) is the quote currency.

Because forex trading always involves exchanging one currency for another, currencies are quoted and traded in pairs.

How does a currency pair work?

Currency pairs express the exchange rate between two currencies.

The exchange rate shows how much of the quoted currency is required to buy one unit of the base currency.

For example:

  • EUR/USD = 1.10

This means €1 can be exchanged for $1.10.

When traders buy a currency pair, they purchase the base currency while simultaneously selling the quoted currency. When they sell a currency pair, they sell the base currency and buy the quote currency.

Exchange rates continuously fluctuate due to factors such as:

  • Interest rates

  • Inflation

  • Economic data

  • Political events

  • Market sentiment

Types of currency pairs

Currency pairs are generally grouped into three categories.

Major currency pairs

Major pairs consist of the most traded currencies in the world and usually include the US dollar.

Examples include:

  • EUR/USD

  • GBP/USD

  • USD/JPY

  • USD/CHF

Minor currency pairs

Minor pairs, also called cross-currency pairs, do not include the US dollar.

Examples include:

  • EUR/GBP

  • EUR/JPY

  • GBP/JPY

Exotic currency pairs

Exotic pairs combine a major currency with the currency of an emerging or smaller economy.

Examples include:

  • USD/TRY

  • USD/ZAR

  • EUR/MXN

Major pairs generally have higher liquidity and tighter spreads, while exotic pairs may experience greater volatility.

How to read a currency pair quote

Understanding a currency pair quote is essential for forex trading.

A currency pair quote contains:

Component Meaning
Base Currency The first currency in the pair
Quote Currency The second currency in the pair
Exchange Rate The amount of quoted currency needed to buy one unit of the base currency

For example, if GBP/USD = 1.3500, it means £1 is worth $1.35.

Traders analyse changes in the exchange rate to identify potential trading opportunities.

Currency pair example

Suppose the EUR/USD exchange rate is 1.1000.

This means:

  • Base currency = Euro (EUR)

  • Quote currency = US dollar (USD)

  • €1 can be exchanged for $1.10

If the exchange rate rises to 1.1200, the euro has strengthened relative to the US dollar. If the rate falls to 1.0800, the euro has weakened relative to the US dollar.

Why currency pairs matter

Currency pairs are the foundation of forex trading. By understanding how exchange rates work and how different currencies interact, traders can better analyse market movements, manage risk, and identify trading opportunities across global currency markets.

✅ In short: a currency pair is the quotation of one currency against another. It consists of a base currency and a quote currency, with the exchange rate showing how much of the quote currency is needed to purchase one unit of the base currency.
