ABN AMRO sees eurozone growth holding up as energy-driven inflation rebound raises ECB tightening risk

ABN AMRO expects the eurozone economy to keep expanding through a renewed energy shock, with Germany’s fiscal spending providing support even as consumption faces fresh pressure from weaker real incomes. The bank has returned to a 0.8% growth forecast for 2026 and maintained 1.2% for 2027, following stronger Q2 activity and upward revisions in Germany.

Inflation, however, is set to be the main constraint on the outlook and could prompt further European Central Bank (ECB) tightening. Headline inflation has risen from a June low of 2.8% to 3.3% in August, a three-year high, driven largely by energy while goods inflation has also picked up. ABN AMRO expects inflation to peak above 3.5% in coming months and to average 3.0% in 2026, which is 0.5pp above its June forecast, with wage growth data from Indeed and the ECB’s tracker pointing to building second-round risks.

Implications for Monetary Policy and Interest Rate Markets

As we digest the latest Eurozone inflation rebound to 3.3% in August, we advise derivative traders to prepare for a more hawkish European Central Bank than currently priced. With energy prices driving headline inflation toward a projected peak above 3.5% in the coming months, the risk of extended monetary tightening is rising sharply. We should position for upward pressure on Eurozone yields, especially since German fiscal spending is keeping the region’s growth resilient at 0.8% for 2026.

To capitalize on this environment, we recommend shorting German 10-year Bund futures as yields, which have recently hovered around 2.45%, look set to climb higher. Traders can also buy put options on December 2026 Euribor futures to profit from the market underpricing the potential for further ECB rate hikes. This protective stance is supported by historical patterns from the 2022–2023 cycle, where sticky wage growth consistently forced policymakers to overshoot initial market expectations.

Opportunities in Currency and Equity Derivatives

In the currency options market, we see a strong case for building bullish Euro exposure, particularly through EUR/USD call options targeting the 1.11 level. The combination of resilient Eurozone growth and a hawkish ECB contrasts sharply with a slowing US economy, where recent manufacturing data has shown signs of cooling. This yield-differential play is further reinforced by the ECB’s forward-looking wage tracker, which indicates that domestic price pressures are becoming entrenched.

For equity derivative traders, we suggest buying near-term call options on the Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index (VSTOXX) to hedge against sudden market sell-offs. Although economic growth remains stable, the double whammy of a renewed energy shock and higher borrowing costs will likely squeeze corporate profit margins. Focusing on defensive sector options, such as utilities or consumer staples, can help cushion portfolios as high inflation begins to weigh on real household incomes again.
